Why did their son,,,,,(SPOILERS)
Why did their son go on the killing spree?....Is it explained in the movie?
Was it due to his parents marital problems? Or was their more to it than that? What sort of person did their son seem to be?

I guess even if there was a reason, it doesn't make us understand any better. For some the reason feels "too small", but for the shooter it was enough.
shareWell even if there's a reason, the film lost it's creditbility when they say he killed 20 people all in one outing. You would have to be an expert marksman or marine sharpshooter to do that.......and then where wre the police? just 1 visit to the parents house? You would think they would block off the house and search for weapons after such an horrendous act
share30 people died at Virginia Tech and 50 people were killed last week in Orlando... Before you say that Orlando was because the guy used an assault rifle, the Virginia Tech shooter used handguns.
So..
That's sort of the whole point. They didn't know. The parents were racking their brains and tearing themselves and each other apart trying to figure out what they did wrong, but at the end of the day, there was no way for them to know. And even if they could, there was no way to fix it.
shareI felt that was the whole point of the film. Some actions just cannot be justified, and even if we are given a reason, it doesn't really make it any easier to understand. This kid was clearly *beep* up, and it almost destroys his parents as they wonder why he would do such a thing. Was it their fault? Or was the kid just mentally unstable? If so, why was he mentally unstable? Is it because of his parents or chemical unbalance? It kind of makes it fascinating in a way. I didn't love this movie but I can't criticize it for not giving a reason as to why Sammy killed those people. If there was supposed to be a specific reason, it would have been touched upon, which it obviously wasn't.
You can't trade magic like *beep* Pokemon cards! - RIP Jesus :(
It was never explained and IMO that's what made this movie so effective. There are some actions, such as going on a murder spree and committing suicide, that are not justified or explainable. This is what made this movie so painful IMO.
I think his pain and anguish went much deeper than his parents having marital problems. It's possible he was just mentally disturbed & a tortured soul. Maybe he was lonesome .. or bullied. We, as the audience, never know ... nor does his parents ever know.
While Kyle's role was not huge, his performance was very effective. He already has what I call very expressive eyes. I also remember his mother saying he was extremely shy and somewhat introverted.
Some hurt, some love, some shout. I fought the world and I lost that bout. ~ Blue October
It wasn't explained in words, but there were plenty of clues.
For example, the opening story about the beach. Who takes the viewpoint of a beach, walked upon and trashed by people? A beach which still loved the people who walked upon it, even though it was unable to tell the people.
Or the brief scene of Sammy reading his heartfelt story to a class and absolutely nobody paying attention or caring.
Or Sammy talking to his mother about snowflakes, how each is made of the same stuff but each turns out different even though most people don't pay attention.
This was a kid who started out being sensitive and then felt rejected by everybody in his life, starting with his parents. Under the right circumstances that can easily turn into the kind of rage that results in a killing spree.
I thought the script did a good job of showing how the parents were disrespectful, unaware and uncaring towards one another. I assumed that if they treated each other this way, then they would have treated their son the same way. The song was an only child, so all of this got heaped on him. And adults dish out more negative things to young people than they do to other adults because adults won't take as much. Kids are kind of stuck and have to take whatever abuse is dished out to them.
The movie also shows that the mother only has one friend and the father says that he has no friends. So they are also isolated with little or no form of support system.
I liked the subtley of the script and how they didn't hit us over the head with anything, yet gave us example after example after example, etc. of how troubled this relationship/family was.
Yes I love all your points.. How about the fact that he was an english major (like his mom the spell checker) yet he might have really had a passion for Chemistry. The story of her forcing him to sing at a Xmas gathering for a present. He cried the whole way thru and never ever opened the present. That was the chemistry set she found in his room when she was searching for clues. I believe she steered him away from his real passion, and had him follow her passion instead.
shareWaaaa! Waaaa! They didn't pay attention to his little story! Waaaa! Waaaa! Mommy doesn't care about snowflakes!
The little psycho slaughtered twenty people. There is no excuse. He needs to burn in Hell forever.
because he was a selfish angry nut case. Why does anyone do this? Theres never a reason
shareAngry? Yes. Selfish? Maybe. Nut case? No. He was just mentally unstable, depressed, and obviously had a lot of issues.

because he was a selfish angry nut case. Why does anyone do this? Theres never a reasonIf it were only that easy to explain ... With all due respect, it's people with your mindset which keeps us from fully understanding the mind of a person who is so mentally ill and/or so full of rage that he/she snaps, commits a mass shooting, then commits suicide. Of course, there is never a justifiable reason for the mass murder of innocent people. But we should never stop searching for an answer. (I apologize for sounding so harsh.)
That was actually something I wondered about when the film was over. Not because the reason would have made a shred of difference, but because of the scene where they watch the video Sammy made where he's screaming about how they could have all avoided his rampage. When someone says something like that you kind of expect them to explain how such a thing could have been avoided. Otherwise, what was the point of making such a video?

I missed the first 1/4 - 1/3 of the film, so I'm going off what I saw. However, it appeared to me that it was kind of like the dad said, Sam was changed years before they knew, years before he left for college and they just didn't know about it. Sam had given up, and was carrying an irrational rage that he could not reconcile. Call it insanity, call it mental illness, but he did not wake up one day and suddenly decide that he just could no longer cope with the world and he would deal with it by shooting a lot of people that day. He had felt abandoned, alone, different, and likely angry and full of rage for a long time. It was just a question of where that was going to be directed at.
I agree with the other poster who said that the parents do not seem good at supporting and acknowledging each other, they likely put a lot of pressure on their son and did not show him a lot of love and acceptance. The difference is that most kids who don't get everything they need from their parents don't react by shooting even one, let alone scores of people and then commit suicide.
To each their own...opinion
I think to have a 'reason' for the son's behaviour would move the film into another area of debate that has been done over and over.
This film shone a light on the shock and confusion of the parents, who imperfect as we all are, had to deal with the aftermath and dreadful responsibility of what their son did..and having to face people who needed to blame THEM when they were in just as much pain as the others who died.
