Just saw the trailer

Looks pretty cool. Expecting a great performance from Willem Dafoe. Not familiar with the Director, but there were some cool visuals in the trailer.

Just watched it.

Eh. I dunno, man. It seems to mostly just be Willem Dafoe acting crazy in a locked room, spliced together with surrealistic visuals.

You may be right that there are some cool visuals but the story did not grab my interest.

I kinda don’t mind the prospect of Willem Dafoe just going crazy inside a locked room, haha! Could be entertaining.
I can’t guess what the story might be just from the trailer, but I have a sneaking suspicion that it’s either a revenge story—where Dafoe’s character wronged someone in the past, and is now paying for it—Or maybe he’s just a thief who tried to rob the wrong person.
Or—now hear me out, though this would be quite disappointing if I’m actually correct—maybe it’s his apartment all along and the movie is just a chronicle of his crazy process to create more art.
Hopefully it will be an interesting film, because I definitely intend to watch it eventually.

I agree that your third possibility would be by far the most disappointing of those three.

#1 reminds me of Old Boy, except that Old Boy works because he is only locked away for maybe 1/3 of the movie. If the lead character in Old Boy was stuck in the room forever then the story never has a chance to come to a resolution.

Dafoe is always good.
Trailer looks weird though.
