Good movie

It's basically Scream:The Thanksgiving Special, but it's generally enjoyable.

That said the killer(s) was extremely obvious.

That's disappointing. I would think Eli Roth wouldn't be interested in the smarmy, unclever postmodernism of Scream.

Scream is good though. The first movie was 5/5 perfection

It's definitely Scream-esque. However it's way gorier than any Scream movie has or probably ever will be. Scream made by a gore fetishist.

If it toned down the humor & teen vibe and added more nudity it would have been a perfect throw back slasher. Those are my only criticisms, it's a bit too 2020s teen friendly and skimps on the nudity. All in all a good attempt by Eli Roth but he was definitely chasing some box office success, casual appeal and trying to be fun with it. Hostel remains his best work.

I'd say this is the best of the 'modern slashers' (post-2010) alongside X (2022).

Excellent review. I'm sure I'll catch it some time in the future.

I really enjoyed it. Had the same thought comparing it to Scream. Maybe Eli Roth could do a future Scream movie? I doubt it though, he'd want to do his own thing more than be constrained by a Ghost Face narrative.

Yeah, overall really fun movie. Hilarious in the right parts so the gore isn't overwhelming. Creative deaths. I liked who they chose to kill and not kill, not entirely predictable. Fun how the love triangle played a part in the plot but wasn't annoyingly overly-focused on, and refreshing that the pairings weren't always in couples. I loved the character of Scuba.

They're already developing a sequel. Hopefully doing this whets Patrick Dempsey's appetite to return to Scream. I wonder if he'll return for Thanksgiving 2. Which really should be titled The Leftovers. If he returns, it'd be cool for him to have an ongoing franchise where he's the villain character. Though it'd be odd for it to go as long as many slasher franchises. But if he returns, then the sequel might lose the whodunit aspect, or figure another way to bring it.

I heard that Eli Roth has been tapped to play Cornelius in another remake of The Planet of the Apes. He was picked for budgetary reasons because they won't have to waste any of the money on a costume or cgi since he can pass for a chimpanzee without any of that.

So you're in the camp thinking there was a second killer? I've seen this floated around other forums but just curious to hear your take.

reply

No. I just didn't want to spoil the movie on how many there were.

I liked the lead girl, she kinda reminds me of the late Britanny Murphy which I adored. She has a good screen presence too.
