Think I figured out something that is missing and just can't be replicated....

And that is the touch and influence of Elmore Leonard's ability to gel all things oddball in one place together.

I think anyone that has read his books and watched the most successful adaptations of his works notices that this limited series doesn't fully possess his essence. What I mean is, if one examines the visual adaptations of his works, Leonard was very apt at creating diverse characters from all walks of life and then throwing them all together and having them gel and blend in a unique way (hell, one of his works was named "Rum Punch"). And while I can't exactly put my finger on it, I think that subtle part is sort of missing in this limited series.

But that is okay because just watching Timothy Olyphant in this role is one of those things we don't get every day. Nor do we often get so many wonderful character actors (especially aging ones) in a program together.

So, in the words of Wyatt Russell as Willoughby in Everybody Wants Some!! :

"We came for a good time, not for a long time."

I agree with your post. This season started out flvery strong and this latest ep (ep 5) seemed a bit off to me. Still, a 'less than' ep of Justified is better than most shows out today. Just happy to be in this world again and I'm hoping they do another limited season. They better not 007 or John Wick our boy Raylan though.

I imagine that many critics and fans (indicated by as often as they keep bringing up the Boyd Crowder character while ignoring how serious his criminal past was) will only be satisfied that if there is a next one, it is based back in Kentucky.

Like I've commented before, I'm just enjoying Timothy Olyphant's revisiting this character because it is one of those rare portrayals we get to see where an actor was born to play the role and no one else will ever be able to do it better (but watch, soon there will probably be a pre-reboot of a young Raylan Givens limited series).
