The First 20 mins are rather crap

Have taken a break from it, it's a very very odd movie, amazed that it was nominated for Best Picture. I am.pretty sure I will come back to it later, and give it another 30.mins or so, but that first 20 mins is really Meh.

The Fish eye lens photography is SO boring now, he's done all that before. All style, no substance.

The quirky "oooooh it's weird" music, the "shocking scene" of the mentally restrained lady playing with a dead man penis... (I expect there will be more similarr scenes from what I have read)....

Just really dumb and stupid, and dull so far.

I don't agree with most of that -- but I do agree he should knock the fish-eye lens on the head. He is in danger of becoming inexorably associated with a lens., which I wouldn't have thought was the best idea.

Perhaps he should take a leaf out of Lars von Trier's book and make his next film with arbitrary limitations. And his arbitrary limitation should be no frigging fish-eye lens.

Thanks for the measured reply, yes he really needs to cut, right back on the Fish Eye lens thing.

I have now completed the movie, I found the last 2 hours of it similarly quite irritating to the first 20 mins, and the OTT sex scenes were just really dull to me, I just "knew" it would be doing such scenes, as it was clearly that kind of movie... but it did
start to improve gradually (I still took a couple more breaks), and I actually almost quite liked the last 30 minutes or so... Just a shame it took nearly 2 hours.of "trying too hard weirdness" to get there.

You win some, you lose some.

I really enjoyed it myself, but I totally understand it wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. I prefer a film that provokes strong opinions one way or the other to one that makes everyone shrug and say 'It was fine.'

But we are both right about the fish-eye. Where do you suppose we can get his email address? He needs to be told.

reply

Haha, yeah, sometimes a Man Just Needs To be Told.

reply

I'm half way in and so far the first 20 minutes have been the best.

reply

The first 40 minutes or so were the strongest part of the movie imo

reply

Agreed. I enjoyed the first 40 minutes and then everything declined after that.

I haven't finished it yet. I wouldn't say the movie was bad, but I most certainly wasn't in the right mindset to jell with it. Sometimes if you watch a movie all the way thru that way you'll hate it forever even if it's good. If i'm not connecting with a movie I get right out. I've hated too many good movies that way over the years. And then again, sometimes it's Satanic propaganda and part of me knows better.
