Hallucinations are very common in hopeless survival situation like this in the extreme cold and is well documented. Its referred to as ice psychosis, polar syndrome or over winter syndrome.

I had a very minor roll of the eyes when it started, but I don't think it was too overdone. Over two years of isolation in such awful conditions is bound to play tricks.

I'm glad it didn't last too long, but it also made sense due to the dire situation and malnutrition.
