you think he would care the same if it was an ugly woman?

i am not sure how to call it, perhaps a hypocrisy, but he was so obsessed about this case just because she was pretty. less attractive woman - and it could have been just a normal investigation with two innocent people end up in jail.
he needs to write a book about all the other cases in which he didn't give a sh!t about the victims and failed to see the flaws in police investigation.
take all the romantic sentiments and symbolism aside, and the main character comes out quite repulsive and a douche, in my opinion. nice cinematography and production values, which make this film watchable, but otherwise it is just mindless and pretentious movie, pretending to say something important when in fact it is as fake and shallow as the oscar it has won.
frankly, i am surprised this story was not made into one of the episodes of law and order, that campanella directed. i guess now we know why he won.

This was my first thought after I came out of the movie. Loved the film, but I don't think he would really have cared if she wasn't pretty, plus I didn't see much evidence of the 'passion' for his wife, that was never really shown at the start, but we just kind of accepted it as viewers.

I think the detective cared so much about this case because he had never seen a man love a woman like Morales had loved his wife.

He also cared about the case, had to write about it, because in retrospect we only learn later that he knew the culprit had gotten away with it, but there was something just not right about that....like how could Morales, the loving husband, ALLOW that to happen....hence he finds out where Morales lived 25 years later and makes him a visit.....

Also he cared about the case because the love the husband showed for his wife was pretty much what he felt for Irene....'the love in the eyes'.....You could see that kind of love in the detective's eyes and also in Irene's.....

You´re just guessing, the movie tells nothing about any others cases or victms, so you cant call him a hypocrite, repulsive, or douche, since we know nothing about his work in general. And "if" does not exist, again we cant guess what will happen if the girl was ugly. We can think about, each one will create a aswers that fits betters his personal beliefs, but no aswer can be proved right or wrong.
PS. I dont speak english, so, I happy if my text in understable, and no more than that.

if she was fat and ugly she probably would be alive. and gomez wouldnt be opsessed with her beauty and inability of having a affair with her. of course she was beautiful, thats was the trigger for gomez

It's human nature. Why should we care about ugly people? They should be all thrown off a cliff anyway... then again not really. If there was no ugly people then we beautiful people wouldn't be so special anymore.

You are a special kind of s.-t.u-.-p-.i-d by assuming the other cases had to deserve the same level of obsession. You do not even know what were his other cases and whether they became cold cases or not or what happened to them (yes, we can assume some became cold cases, but there are so many factors you are not taking into account).

It's completely plausible. Attractive people, both women and men, are treated better in life, and we see all the time that the murder cases that get huge news publicity and investigations almost always involve victims who are attractive young women or cute children. Are we to believe ugly women and children are never murdered? Of course they are, but in death just as in life, they don't get the attention that good-looking people get.
