"Exorcist Believer" sequel plans 'gone up in smoke?' - Jason Blum updates on future of Blumhouse’s ‘Exorcist’ franchise

It’s no secret that last year’s The Exorcist: Believer wasn’t as successful as Blumhouse and Universal hoped it would be, neither critically nor financially. Director David Gordon Green was initially on board to direct an entire trilogy of new movies in the franchise, with The Exorcist: Believer intended to be only the first film in that three-film sequel series.

It was all part of a massive $400 million deal to bring the franchise back to life on the big screen, and The Exorcist: Deceiver had in fact already been dated for release on April 18, 2025.

Those plans have changed, however. We recently learned that David Gordon Green will not be directing Deceiver as planned, and the movie altogether may have gone up in smoke.

Where does the franchise go from here? Will the original trilogy plans come crashing down, now that David Gordon Green has moved on from the director’s chair?

It’s a question that even producer Jason Blum isn’t sure how to answer. Speaking with The Direct this week, Blum suggested that the original plan is being entirely retooled.

Blum explained in a recent red carpet chat…

“We are definitely going to make another Exorcist movie, but I wanted more time to figure out what it would be. I have no idea what it’s going to be yet.”

Given the $400 million spend, Blumhouse and Universal likely have no choice but to make two more Exorcist movies, but it sounds like the next one may hit the reboot button all over again. It’s hard to imagine them sinking even more money into the storyline set up by The Exorcist: Believer, as it was a vision that audiences and critics hardly showed much love for.

The problem with ALL OF THIS is that Hollywood has simply made too many horror movies devoted to "Possession" and Demons and the Devil, so making an EXORCIST reboot based on that just wasn't special and felt like another lame horror movie, plus, they trotted out a 90 year old actress no one even knew was alive in Elen Burstyn to make her out to be Big bad momma like Jamie Lee Curtis and ends up having her Legacy dragged through the mud with how they killed her off..

casual moviegoers with just a surface knowledge of horror movies, maybe seen Exorcist 1 and bits of the sequels on utube etc wouldnt even know/remember Burstyn anyway. they just recall Linda Blair (and Max Von Sydow) as the 'face' of the Exorcist franchise, like JLC is for Halloween or Sigourney Weaver is for Alien or Neve Campbell is for Scream..

so they chose the wrong actress to center a legacy sequel around! it shouldve been Blair! (no doubt that was the plan for the sequel but the 1st one got to be a hit to even have a sequel)

I think you're right about Burstyn. She was great in the original but she's hardly 'the face' that people recall from it. Blair, and then Von Sydow without a doubt. Even third I'd say probably Jason Miller. Obviously Von Sydow and Miller aren't available, but that doesn't mean that Burstyn suddenly becomes a good choice.

Sounds like good news. There does not need to be an Exorcist "franchise".

I'm sure that won't be a surprise to anyone.
