The Film That Killed Sword and Sandals genre

Hollywood hasnt revisted this genre in eons it has joined the western this was the last tentpole for the genre it hasnt reappeared it had a bad streak after Troy(2004)

reply

pretty sure the flopping of Troy and then Alexander was what killed it

reply

it manage to have a few releases up until 2014 thats 10 years no one has been able recapture what Made Gladiator a best picture winner

reply

i guess 300 was a success, but that's about it

reply

You act like there were a ton of swords and sandal movies up until 2014. The genre comes and goes. The success of Lord of the Rings reignited an interest in it after many years of being absent from Hollywood, then audiences moved on to other things after a while. It'll likely return as it always does.

reply

Gladiator winning Best Picture was probably what reignited interest in it.

reply

That's a good possibility too. My point is that the genre comes and goes.

Smart!

No, this did fine box-office wise. Same as the 300 sequel. The other 2014 Hercules with that Twilight guy killed it plus the box office failure of Exodus and Pompeii. It's funny how many sword-and-sandal movies came out that year.

Like its such a consistent genre. Its more like an eternal promise that occasionally appears to become a permanent mainstream thing and then fades, like Medieval Fantasy, Western and Pirates.

The only real permanent genres are Science Fiction, Superheroes, Romance, Comedy, crime movies and maybe Horror.

Roland Emmerich said he wants to do a movie set in Ancient Rome. So maybe it will be revived again.
