I'm trying to see how the kids explained to their parents where they were going. Even if they didn't mention that the party would be in a network of tunnels (and at least one of them would), it would just take one parent to recognize the name John Rambo.

"Hmmmm.....let me see. You want me to let you go onto the property of a guy who went crazy and butchered a town full of sherrifs deputies, so you can party in some network of underground survival tunnels he dug under his property?....I think you're grounded."

Remember the media didn't see first blood the way us the viewers saw it. To most people who remember the story he is a blood thirsty psychopath, and over time the number of dead deputies would get exaggerated.

Excellent point about the "Rashomon effect," though the concept is likely as old as consciousness itself; just been watching Kurosawa lately. That said, lying, or simply not disclosing the full truth of what you're doing on a Saturday night to your parents isn't exactly a recent invention, either. That said, I'm not sure if Gabriella knew about John's adventures almost forty years prior, or if so, would have broken his confidence and disclosed them to her friends.

tl;dr: plausible.

I hear you, but surely the name John Rambo must ring a bell to anyone who was alive at the time. In the Rambo universe, if the parents were alive at the time they would remember the news 35 years ago talking about a former green beret savaging a bunch of deputies. It would just take one person in the town to recognize the name.

Point taken, but after all he was "just a ranch hand," regardless of the obvious bond he had with the family. I'd wager the topic of any conversation between she and her friends about the tunnels wouldn't go beyond that. And if his name did come up, it would be even more of a stretch to imagine any friends' convo with their parents about their plans for the night would involve the name of the structure's architect. Maybe I'm just a bad parent who has a more hands-off attitude with kids old enough to drive... :)

they are not really kids, more like late teens, with cars and drinking alcohol, so i guess they don't have to tell their parents in detail what they do or where they go.

How do you know Rambo was remembered in a bad light? I mean he only did 5 years in prison, after that he did that heroic rescue mission exposing the government. Only one guy died and he acted in a negligent way, it looked like that for the younger cops who could defend Rambo's actions as Teasle and the older cops would retire or die.

Judging by what you see in the beginning of this movie it looks like he's respected in the community.

It is possible he is seen in a good light, but remember those younger cops were hurt, they had a fellow officer die and were probably under tremendous pressure to back up Teasle and the others. As for the rescue mission I do see you point, it would be hard to cover that up, but not necessarily impossible. Also, if it did become public record, then the idea that this guy could single handedly take on hundreds of Russian and Vietnamese troops single handedly might still make people wary of him.

It's interesting how anonymous he is or is allowed to be. Perhaps he has done so many good deeds that he is just left alone and respected? You certainly wouldn't want to get on his bad side.

The kids probably wouldn't have a clue unless they thought it was worthwhile Googling his name. Maybe some of the parents also don't know. I couldn't tell you the names of people who have done similarish things, like sieges and fighting against the Police. We had one just short time ago here in Australia and I don't recall the names of the people involved.
