Who was Worse?

Love this movie!
But always trying to work out if Walt was a bad father or they were bad sons?
Like the sons very distant and at times selfish and cruel (ie showing up to their mothers funeral late, wanting walt to move into a retirement home, only calling Walt when they needed something)
But like Walt said himself "I was never really close with either of my boys"
Are his son's attitudes an effect of his parenting?
Wondered if anyone has any input, would love to hear some??

Bad sons, they were not only disrespectful to him but to the memory of their dead mother. And their kids were pathetic pieces of scat.I was happy to see all of them shut out of the will.

Well, we don't really know whether they were shut out of his will or not. All we know is that he left his house (which it's implied his son Mitch wants) to the church and his 1972 Ford Gran Torino (which his grand-daughter clearly wants) to Thao.

During his confession, Walt admits he wasn't the best father to his sons and it's clear throughout the movie that their relationship isn't very good, something he clearly regrets. So I think it's fair to assume he left at least something for them as a means of making up for his paternal absence, perhaps is other assets were sent two ways: Half to the Hmong community and half to his family.

I wouldn't say he was a bad father. Maybe a misguided and distant one and one filled with too much time working and little time with his sons to teach them how to be respectful. They probably grew bitter of him spending so little time with them. Just watching that little BBQ scene with his neighbors shows he at least has some compassion for people and that he can be a really nice person.

I'd say both. Walt was never close with his kids, something he regrets. After so many years of not having a relationship with their father, the kids stopped trying. The kids look bad though by only calling Walt when they need something, not acting appropriately at the funeral, etc. Walt tried to connect with one of the kids when he called about having cancer, but he got brushed off. Did Walt deliberately have a bad relationship with his kids? No, I think he was old school and was busy with work and trying to support the family.
