... that other guy, the main criminal's partner, to die PAINFULLY on death row, given how, as guilty as he may have been legally, he wasn't the one who killed Clyde's wife and daughter and actually wanted to talk him out of it?

The fact that he exchanged substances etc and made his death more painful, why did he want to do it so badly?

This way the guy dies on his terms not the state's "justice".

I think maybe because he didn't do anything to help him and his family. He could had a change of heart and saved them with the way he looked down on Darby's actions, but he chose not to.
