Watching this again, after Russia invaded Ukraine. Seems more relevant now, as was the Lynch version back in the Cold War days. The themes and symbolism take on more meaning.

Ukraine produces a whopping 10 % of ALL annual wheat on Earth. And combined with Russia, almost 33 %. It's a huge deal.
