Could’ve been SO much better

Had they pushed the envelope in some areas. But they didn’t in any way besides dog poop. Needed more intense bullying. More wedgies. More stupid humor. It tried to toe the line of being a Christmas movie without going TOO far in any areas. Which shouldn’t surprise anyone today. And for that it can’t go beyond a 6 out of 10. It was mediocre. Capable of so much more.

It started with some potential when his flashback riding with no helmet and his woke kid asks about one so his stocking cap turns into a helmet... They should have used that device more, I mean his friend could have been white (which would have been much more likely at that time period) and then his friend suddenly turns black because of his woke kid. They could have used that throughout to explain away the part of the movie where the ignored how the 80's really was to at least explain why it was modified.

Why is it more likely that his friend would be white at that time period ?

Because in the 80's the schools were much less integrated than they are today and the kids pretty much segregated themselves by race in schools. That was true throughout the country whether you were in a school in the midwest or one of those cities that held itself out as a bastion of integration like Boston. While segregation was legally eliminated by the courts the reality was it still existed to a very large degree, and was certainly the case in the 80's.

THAT IS FAIR...I ENJOYED IT...BUT YOU ARE DEAD ON.

I disagree completely.

I think, if anything, it went a little TOO FAR as it is with some of its gags. The dog shit, which you mentioned, was disgusting. The puking bit was also gross.

I also think they should've softened the character of the dad a bit. They do a good job of redeeming him at the end, but I wish they had made him a little less of an asshole during the rest of the film. They should've give him a few more likable moments.
