So what if he was working for the CIA?

The USA is one of the UK's closest allies. It's not as if they need to have sleeper agents in the UK to get US-centric policies in place.

A really controversial film would be if Lang was in the pay of the Saudis, or the Israelis, or the Chinese communist party, but I guess that might be too close to the truth for some real-life former Prime Ministers.

Tony Blair probably had a good laugh at this film and then went off to count his billions...

I thought that was odd too. I like this film for its atmosphere, settings and character interaction, not for its political plot; I get the feeling that Polanski wasn't too interested in all the contrived conspiracy stuff either. To me, the big question is whether or not Ewan is the "ghost" of the previous ghostwriter.

"UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is a CIA Agent: Full Story Within!"

Imagine that headline.

Imagine there was a tape and legitimate documentation that Trump really was a Russian asset.

Any political rival would run Lang's party into the ground for decades with that. It would also mean a MASSIVE mole hunt inside the entire British political system looking for more of the same, and agents for other countries. A world leader being revealed as the pawn of another country's government would change politics on a global scale for years afterwards.

Plus the fact that they murdered over keeping it a secret.

reply

Yeah, I can't see how any aspect of it wouldn't be a big deal.
