What did she do in this movie that was so "unforgivable"?

Also, does society HAVE that right to be judgmental as seen in this movie OR be more forgiving or is the whole point of this movie was that society was "wrong" to act the way it did?

And does THIS movie also try to say something about "Because she is a woman, is it right or wrong for her to be forgiven or not?" or anything along those lines?

And was her "crime" REALLY that terrible as in pre-meditated and say not out of self defense etc etc etc?

Cheers.

SPOILERS

for a long time through the film, we’re led to believe she killed an police officer

She didn't commit any crime but everyone believed she did. She went to prison for years to protect her 5 year old sister, who actually shot the sheriff.

...but she didn't shoot the deputy.

I figured it was a set-up
