Jose Benavidez Miscast as Felix

Jose Benavidez Is a super welterweight fighter in real life, but for some reason, Michael B, Jordan, as the Director, decided to cast him as the intimidating heavyweight champion. To be a successful heavyweight these days you have to be at least 220 pounds. That’s 70 more pounds this guy fights at, and it shows in the film. Unbelievable, don’t understand why this decision was made.

I just watched the movie last night and he looked way way too small for heavyweight. But there were even more problems with the character. Latino heavyweights are incredibly rare with - I think - Andy Ruiz Jr. as the only one to win any sort of heavyweight belt in the last 200 years (and he was born and raised in San Diego and lost his title 6 months later). It would have been really cool if they played up this scarce history in the movie. With the hopes of Latin America riding on Felix’s shoulders, it would have provided a credible explanation for the pressure on a Mexican heavyweight not reject the match after Drago was injured. As it was however, it made no sense for Felix to fight Dane in the movie. Dane was a convicted felon who just stepped out of prison and had done absolutely zero to earn a title shot that others spend entire careers trying to achieve. And Dane was an unprofessional jerk when they sparred. Why would Felix want to risk his career on charity for Dane? Most importantly, Felix had spent months training for Drago who presumably had a different fighting style. Drama was good for the movie but they made the Felix character look like an amateur moron who got all his advice from his mom (which was also silly).

Great post Callahan. I’m not sure how I missed John Ruiz but the five recognized belts for each division makes things so convoluted in the sport. That link you sent me shows that John Ruiz had a very interesting initial reign as a heavyweight champ. His first belt came by default / lawsuit when Lennox Lewis refused to defend the WBA title against him apparently believing it an unworthy match. However, Ruiz then fought Evander Holyfield three times with the WBA title on the line and you have to respect that. I appreciate the education on his subject. Learn something new every day.
