She's Hollywood's idea of average looking. They have ridiculously high standards for the leads in films, especially female leads.

No, she was just shy and didn't put effort into her appearance.

Yeah, it's funny--but they actually kind of sold it here (she somehow looked way hotter when she got her "makeover").
