Online Dating App Confusion

SPOILIER ALERT!

Okay, so I now know it was Dawn doing the catfishing but I was a little dismayed that Nick actually already had an online dating account.

It was shown in earlier episodes that the account was created in 2018 and not as a result of his wife's affair like they had all begun to assume. When it was becoming clear that he was a good guy and not an abusive womaniser however, I was waiting to see how it all happened and who was behind it.

So when it cuts back to Nick first starting his job two years before, it shows us how Dawn had access to all of his photos and personal information when she was setting up his work computer. As she's copying all of his pics onto the PC, his phone pings with one of the women messaging him. Dawn looks surprised and it shows her then being curious enough to log into his online dating account. I just wish it had turned out that Dawn had created the account from scratch. Knowing that Nick wasn't a completely loyal and innocent husband kind of ruined it for me.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this series and it managed to surprise me in the end, even after I thought I'd had it all figured out.

I was just about to post the exact same thing. The old woman logged into an EXISTING account where Nick already had an ongoing conversation with some girl.

If anything, it would have actually made more sense for the plot, in my opinion, if Dawn created the profiles herself from scratch. Especially since Nick was so mind-bogglingly stupid as to share his actual password he was using for everything with a person he had literally just met, and even agreed to sync his personal cell phone (why would anyone be willing to do this at work, btw? 🤔).

Seems to me like something the writers overlooked, rather than something that was actually thought out.

Oh, also, it's not clear to me how Sophie's affair was relevant to Dawn's activity. Back in the truck Nick said to Simon that he knew who impersonated him, since he only told one person about the affair. Okay, and?..

I don't think the dating app aspect was fleshed out enough but from what I gathered, he signed up for the dating app but never actually had it in him to follow through on an actual affair. The exchange the catfish stumbles upon before taking over his identity is:

Mandy: Hey Nick, did you get my pics?
Nick: I did! Looks like a blast. And can I say you look amazing in a bikini.
Mandy: I'm happy to show you more if you are so inclined ;)
Mandy: Haven't heard from you lately...?
Mandy: What's been happening?

So based on that, I see Nick as a man who had his moments of weakness but when it was on the brink of the point of no return he walked away from the app and didn't respond to a woman who was very obviously into him. Like I said they could've done a better job fleshing this out and showing Nick at conflict with himself.

Ahh, that makes sense. I’m glad you wrote that out, well said.

I just commented on another post and maybe I am wrong. I thought it was stated that Nick set up the dating profile 6 months before he engaged in a relationship with Sophie. He stopped using it after his relationship started, hence why Mandy was stating she hasn't heard from him in a while.
