6/10. Good but won't be a classic

A heavily stylized black Western which I mostly enjoyed.

I think the modern soundtrack was overdone. I was almost afraid that they were going to throw in Old Town Road there somewhere. Movies that use modern soundtracks -- whatever modern is for the time -- tend to date themselves faster than movies that use more instrumental soundtracks. Older westerns are timeless classics partially because their orchestral music is timeless.

Similarly, the modern language was at odds with the setting and the time period. I was waiting for someone to refer to a 'gat' when they pulled out their revolver.

The humour at times threatened to turn it into a Blazing Saddles-style parody... the 'white town' joke, the "why they gotta count so slow" showdown at the end with Cherokee Bill...

For me it worked best when they played it straight. Idris Elba's complicated villain was a big part of why I enjoyed this. The end reveal was powerful, but I was still casting my mind back to some of the goofy stuff that had happened earlier so some of the punch was compromised for me.

Cool---I'm watching it then.

6/10. It is a case of style over substance, but I liked it fine. But I admittedly liked the villains better than the protagonist. Jonathan Majors was kind of dull.

reply

I agree. Elba's villain was way more interesting and charistmatic.

reply

Yes, he was.
Good movie, excellent violent climax.
