What a piece of shit 🤦🏻‍♂️

It actually started well with some nice setups and Anthony Michael Hall was a welcome presence, then it becomes apparent that this ‘story’ has no identifiable protagonist. The only thread was Michael himself who is basically a Terminator minus the personality.

The kills were constant and disgusting. That, and some neat cameos from the 70’s original, are the only reasons to watch this turd, and makes it better than the previous one - which was a dull, confused slog with pointless tangents and uninspired kills. In both films, unwelcome ‘DUMMM!’ sound effects accompany and ruin every potentially scary moment.

However the ending to Halloween 2018, mediocre though it was, was a masterstroke compared to the godawful final moments of this. Just when the townsfolk have Michael surrounded they attack him with lame, ineffective weapons. Finally someone grows a brain and pulls out a gun, but not only do bullets magically avoid Michael 95% of the time, when they do make contact he’s invulnerable to them. What the hell are Michael’s powers? What are his strengths and weaknesses? Why don’t the characters risking their lives to destroy him seem to care about these pertinent questions..??

Finally Anthony M Hall gets his chance and attacks Michael with… a baseball bat? And this scene was presented in irritating impressionistic slo-mo overlaid with a monologue from Laurie. This is the epic battle we’ve been waiting for and they treat it like some coda 🤦🏻‍♂️

Then, when you’re confused, tired and frustrated, they fucking kill off Laurie’s daughter! She’s probably the closest thing to a protagonist the film has and she somehow fails to hear the bloodbath taking place on the next street and allows Michael to sneak up and turn her into sushi. This is also done in an impressionistic style which drains it of any impact.

When Laurie learns that Michael has done what she always feared he would - murder the daughter she spent a lifetime protecting - she has virtually no emotional reaction whatsoever 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Is writer-director David Gordon Green human or a bot in a skinsuit? How the hell did Jamie Lee Curtis sign on to this and enthusiastically publicise it? What does the studio have on her? When did narrative cinema die? Is Hollywood actively trying to dumb down the population?

These were the only questions that haunted my damaged brain once the credits mercifully started rolling.

By far the biggest problem with these movies is there no protagonist. It seems like one of those ensemble episodes of The Simpsons where you see the whole goddam town. If they were smart they would have had the first movie be JLC’s, the second her daughter’s, the third her granddaughter’s.

It’s like the screenwriter was completely absent after the intial brainstorming session and the director just shot a bunch of stuff and stuck it together in the edit. How does any sane person throw money at a ‘script’ like this?

The one who desperately & shamelessly wants to make money off the Halloween franchise name branding.
