Do YOU think they're gonna rebound eventually?

Like after the pandemic, are the Oscars & other award shows' popularity gonna come back? Or are people just not interested in the whole "millionaires patting themselves in the back & rewarding each other" thing?. Genuinely asking.

Cause wow, they REALLY overestimated their importance this year. A 58% drop in ratings. Like damn, that's a huge drop.

The "Celebrity circle jerk" events, as my online friends call 'em lol, have been losing relevancy in the past few years but that's just massive drop. Especially for an event like The Oscars

I think they will rebound, at least somewhat. They may never return to the huge numbers of some of the past ceremonies, but I expect them to go up by quite a bit next year.

Yeah, ok makes sense. I guess it also depends on the quality & popularity of the nominated films going forward

I guess right now, thanks to covid & stuff, watching millionaires give each other trophies isn't a top priority

Also, the top winning film, Nomadland is hella depressing. Especially for the times we're in. Not knocking it, just saying, it's a depressing movie

reply

They easily could if they stopped with the preachy political nonsense and got back to entertaining.Unfortunately Hollywood has it's lips locked so firmly on the backside of woke culture that i don't see it happening anytime soon.

For real though, I always hate those "we know what you're going through speeches" Like you live in mansions. In gated communities. You literally have no idea.

Like your food or furniture probably costs more than our salaries 😅. I honestly don't think they actually realize how out of touch they are

Just accept your award, thank your families or coworkers or whatever & just move on.

I would give them a bump for next year if the movie business begins to rebound and more people go back to the movies in theaters. It depends what movies get nominated and if they mix in movies that are commercial successes with the art house fare.

Also let Ricky Gervais host next year. I might watch for that.

reply

For real though, he's literally the only reason I watched the Golden Globes or any award show

THEY WILL CONTINUE TO SLIP INTO THE NICHE FOREIGN/ARTY/OVERLY DRAMATIC AWARD SHOW THEYVE BEEN HEADING FOR AS TASTES AND MARKETS WIDEN AND THEY STAY NARROW.

That's basically one of the reasons I wanted to ask this question. Apart from the "millionaires patting themselves on the back thing", the nominated films nowadays are more indie than those of the past. Not saying they're bad, just not as mainstream. That's what I mean. The majority of audiences don't like those type or haven't even seem 'em

They don't reach that broader audience. Say like your Gladiators, Forrest Gumps, Titanics, Braveheart or The Lord of the Rings of this world, to name a few. As you said, they mostly go for the niche ones nowadays

Like I said in one of my comments above, the popularity of the nominated films is gonna play apart in audiences coming back for these awards
