...I am at at an age, in my 70s, and the issues of dementia and dying, the father eventually being unable to care for himself and being committed to a nursing home, made me feel depressed, wondering if that would become my fate.

I was also confused about who some of the characters really were, though that was cleared up at end, when you saw the reality. But one character still confuses me: was Laura (Imogen Poots) real or imagined? Was the father imagining her to be his daughter Lucy, who had been killed years before?

That was my take on it. I assumed that Imogen Poots was physically the daughter who had died but her words were those of the caretaker we meet later in the film.

I'm pretty sure that his mind conflated the appearance of his daughter with the new carer.

Yeah, I can only imagine how you feel.

My grandfather had alzheimer and died at 91 without being able to talk. It started when he hit the 80s.

But this may not necessarily be your fate. There are people reaching their 90s and their mind is pretty sharp.
