Fargo was more of a dark comedy, this show is a lot more depressing.

It reminds me more of HBO's "SHARP OBJECTS" ...

where that other ABUSIVE 13 yr old PSYCHOPATH (the sister of the journalist sent to investigate the murders of the 2 young girls) ...

was killing them so that she could decorate the floor of her DOLL HOUSE with their teeth ...

(so that her DOLL HOUSE would also MATCH the IVORY bathroom floor of her LUNATIC mother).

But this time the LEADING FEMALE character is the DETECTIVE, and her love interest is the
MALE writer, whereas it was REVERSED in "Sharp Objects" where the LEADING FEMALE character was the writer/journalist and her love interest was the MALE detective.

And basically you could also say that the MAIN character in "SHARP OBJECTS" also investigates a local murder while trying to keep her life from falling apart.

So maybe we'll also see the life of MARE further falling apart like it also did for the "SO" journalist???

But "So far" Mare's mother doesn't seem to be as crazy as the other one though. At least not yet. But then she did also chose to attend the CELEBRATION of her former SON in LAW, instead of attending the other CELEBRATION for her daughter.

So who knows what else she might end up doing as the story progresses???

Maybe we'll also discover that her mother is the one who kept MARE from getting some kind of a sports scholarship to attend college and get away from this town???

sounds like a version of Happy Valley

Which one did you have in mind?

Because a search also turns up lots of them including this one:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Valley_(TV_series)

But it's also a BRIT tale with a setting that takes place overseas (rather than here in a town in the US).

So what happens (in whatever version of it you've mentioned) that reminds you of this other EASTTOWN, PA story?

I imagine this one:

Only one Happy Valley series on IMDB.

That's the same one that's in the WIKIPEDIA link.

But reading the summary of it also doesn't remind me very much of this story -- due to the way it takes place in another different country where the culture is completely different (they don't have female basketball stars, for instance, over there in the UK which is also a MAIN THEME of this show).
