Was the Vivienne Westwood dress really that great?

I really didn't like it that much and didn't see why they were acting like it was the most beautiful dress ever made. I thought it was kind of tacky and really not that pretty. It just looked like she was wearing a mass of polyester bags or something. I thought some of the other dresses she modeled at the Vogue shoot were much prettier.

No. That is NOT what I'd consider a gorgeous wedding dress...at all.

I'm not sure which one is was when she was trying on the dresses, I want to say Oscar Da La Renta, but the lace one with the flower in her hair was my favourite

"What you don't like rice? Tell me Michael, how can a billion Chinese people be wrong?"

reply

The one she was married in. Or more appropriately was gonna get married in.

Mine too!

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that I'll be over here looking through your stuff.

I didn't think it was that bad. Out of all the wedding dresses she did for the shoot, it seemed the most like "her". The Oscar de la Renta one was my favorite; absolutely gorgeous. Despite that it didn't seem to be Carrie's style. But wow, that dress.

I love Vivienne Westwood as a person and as a designer, but that dress was not as special as the movie made it out to be. Other dresses we much prettier. But I have to agree with previous poster, this one seemed more "Carrie", so it was chosen as The Dress.

reply

I liked the dress but I hated her hair. I wish she would've done it down and wavy like how she had it in the photo shoot.

reply

All of the other dresses were prettier, imo. Even the over-the-top couture Dior was nicer. I mean, it wasn't an ugly dress, but it wasn't anything special. My favorite was the lace Oscar de la Renta gown.

The styling for the Westwood gown at the photo shoot was much softer, and looked a lot better for Carrie. The styling she chose for her actual ceremony (hair severely pulled back, unflattering red lipstick, and that weird bird) were much too harsh and aging on her.

I think she would have rocked the short, tiered gown (can't remember who it was by). It had a 20's style, and she would have looked beautiful.

I agree about how that Vivienne Westwood gown looked far, far better in the photo shoot when Carrie had her hair down and flowing, and the pretty veil. That softer look was actually my favorite of the photo shoot scene, and the Westwood gown looked fairly pretty in a pouffy princess way I guess.

The actual wedding look was horrible - too harsh, with the up-do and the spiky feather/bird.

To quote another movie “it was a meringue”

Is that from Pretty In Pink? I remember the scene where Andie, shopping for a prom dress, inadvertently overhears the convo between mean girl Benny & her mother:
Benny (scornfully) "I look like I should be on top of a wedding cake!"
Mom: " Oh, darling, I wish!"
(One of my fav scenes from that movie, although it harks back to 1950's sensibilities, or maybe circa 1900's. Pretty sure a wealthy mother wasn't looking to marry off her teenage daughter straight outta high school during the time period the movie was made)

I was quoting from Four Weddings and a Funeral. But sounds like a similar quote from Pretty in Pink

Totally agree that the way Carrie styled the Westwood dress for the wedding, with the autrè bird fascinator & edgy makeup, was complete runway high fashion: more at home on the catwalk than in a church. But this was deliberately making a not-so-subtle statement about how farcical the whole process had become. It had turned into a circus, & that was why Big was having qualms. He even said that he needed to know that it was still just him & her.

I have always been fascinated by the way that fashion was used so deftly to further the stories in this series, & the Westwood dress is a perfect example of that.

However, while I really love the message of Carrie's simple little vintage suit that she eventually wore, I did think the actual suit was unflattering & matronly & poorly fit. Loved the concept, just not that suit.

I never made the connection about the over-the-top styling and the out-of-control wedding, but it makes perfect sense now!

And I totally blame Anthony for the fact that the wedding got out of hand. If he hadn't been so bitchy about Carrie's suit (which it was obvious that she loved), the seed wouldn't have been planted.

"And the bride wore a dress by....nobody."
Possibly the best line in the movie. It jump-started the whole plot, didn't it? So great, the expressions on Charlotte's & Anthony's faces at the reveal of the suit were priceless.

This is such a cool connection :O.

I can see how the over the top styling was a statement, or symbolic if you will, of how farcical and over-the-top things had become. That's a good point.

But someone elsewhere on this thread offered the argument of why shouldn't Carrie have her big, fancy wedding - it may have been Big's 3rd, but it was Carrie's 1st!!

That is huge.

He should have conceded that the wedding day should be what she wanted it to be. She'd waited ten years of him sitting on the shelf, this might be the only wedding she'll have. That doesn't negate the true importance of the marriage, the "me and you". In fact, making a big deal of it is something you do in the belief that it's going to be your only one, which in fact supports her belief in their union after the big day. He should have known that just because you have a crazy huge wedding and make a big deal of that one day, doesn't necessarily mean it's not still all about what you have as a couple.

He should have known "This is typical Carrie, let her have her day." But then, there wouldn't have been a story to hang the movie on, lol.
