what happened with 2nd Tintin film?

I loved, enjoyed the first Tintin film a whole lot. 2 big thumbs way up. I thought Peter Jackson is supposed to take over the 2nd film as director, and Spielberg produce it. So what happened to the 2nd Tintin film? Is it going to be made? Is there some problem with making it/conflicts with making it? I would just love to see a continuation with Jamie Bell as Tintin, Andy Serkis as Haddock, and rest of original voice cast.

I absolutely agree! Anyway the last I heard, Andy Serkis said it is still on. Peter Jackson will direct the second and Spielberg will produce so they'll be switching jobs. I think we can expect Prof. Calculus to appear as well. I'm sure they'll start shortly after the third Hobbit is released. I'm looking forward to news as well!

Last I heard, Spielberg said "don't hold me to this, but Christmas 2015", that was in late 2013. So 2015-16 I'd guess

reply

Cool! I'm holding my thumbs then.

It now says on imdb that the second film will open in mid december of 2016...

reply

That's subject to change of course so we'll see.

I'm rewatching the 1st Tintin movie and wondering the same thing. I think the main thing is that Peter Jackson was busy with the Hobbit trilogy. Apparently, they're trying to aim for a 2015 release.

If it's all the same to you, I'll have that drink now.-Loki (Marvel's Avengers)

reply

Well here we are now in 2015. I read other articles saying now Jackson's aiming for a 2016 release which is ridiculous. I'm worried either Jackson or Spielberg will croak before the trilogy is completed.

reply

Agreed. I liked this movie a lot. It's one of the greatest achievements in animation. I want to see the next adventure of Tintin, Haddock and Snowy.

Jackson is probably still busy working on the extended cut of the third Hobbit movie, which he'll likely finish sometime in the summer, and Jamie Bell is the star of a TV show (AMC's Turn), which could cause some scheduling difficulties.

There's been no public disclosure of how much pre-production work has gone into the sequel, or even if they've got a script ready to go. I'd guess that they do have a draft, but they're probably waiting on Jackson to make final revisions before filming.

As for production, I seem to recall the blu extras saying the live-action shoot took a month or so to film, and then more than a year to animate.

So, best case, they might be able to shoot in late summer/early fall, and then animate it in time for a Christmas 2016 release. (That's assuming, of course, Jackson doesn't decide to take a full year's vacation bathing in money or something.) But a spring or even summer 2017 release might be more realistic.

Jamie Bell has recently announced they start filming late next year.

reply

And here we are in 2018 with no Tintin sequel!

The latest news from late 2017 were that the folks involved in the first movie would still like to make a second one. So what gives??

reply

Spielberg Said recently that the movie will be made but with a release not before 2021 - a decade after the first one.

reply

I don't think it had enough success to warrant a sequel.

reply

That's unfortunate.

reply

This film was fantastic, exciting story with characters you care about and superb visuals. It doesn't have enough pop culture references, music numbers or female characters. That's why there's no sequel.

reply

I disagree, the visuals were indeed great but the characters and story were lackluster. I think it was a poor mash-up that failed to integrate the great elements of the books. Plus Tintin felt like a kid with ADHD rather than the smart composed young man he is in the books.

reply

Yes, when you get too much into action sequences you lose character and emotions. See Howard the Duck.

reply

I would love a follow up but sadly I think the Unicorn has now sailed.
