Dany has shown no signs of madness at all up to this point...

If they have her go all Mad Queen in order to kill her off and for Jonny Sue to rule, then you know this show has become utter rubbish. And I fear they are going this route with trying to push Sansa as being so smart and insightful and opposing Dany and all this sudden talk about how Dany needs someone to control her impulses.

It would be ironic though given all the plot armor and absurd triumphs Dany has had from day one.

Bullshit. She threatened to burn down Qarth, a city of innocent people that did nothing to her just because she didn’t get her way. She’s been crazy from the start.

reply

Threatened to, but didn't carry it out. Have you ever said to anyone in rashness, "I'm going to shoot myself in the head if ....." The point to Quarth was a) one of her handmaidens betrayed her, b) her trusted Dothraki men were killed as were one of her other handmaidens, c) her dragons ostensibly her children were kidnapped and being held somewhere she didn't know, d) those men who ran Quarth were not dealing as honest brokers and were ready to leave her and her small khalisar to the Garden of Bones to die. She was their leader and wanted someplace to rest, have food, drink and to have her loyal people taken care of. If you notice when she left Astapor after getting her Unsullied and Missandei, she only burned one small area of the city and left the rest untouched. As for Yunkai, it was taken with minimal bloodshed as Daario #1, Jorah and Grey Worm made a strategic insertion in order to minimize the bloodshed. Lastly when she and her people came in Meereen, she saw 167 children being crucified on crosses. She took her vengeance out on the masters plus the Sons of the Harpy. When Drogon burned that child, she then locked both Viserion and Rhaegal up in the catacombs under the pyramid. She then tried to make restitution to the man. When Yara and Theon got there she explicitly told them, "No more reeving, raping or roving...." Meaning no more doing their Ironborn raids. That is not the mindset of a madwoman. It's one of a sensible and sane leader. No different than Jon.

There are countless examples of Dany showing signs of being a ruthless tyrant who leans towards eventually going mad. Rewatch the series, it’s all there.

She's shown plenty of signs actually. The overall problem is the lack of writing, the short number of episodes, combined with all the time developing her to be more compassionate than her father. Its the abruptness of it that caught people off guard.

reply

Yes, exactly. There have been plenty of signs throughout the series. Tyrion had to talk her out of doing the same thing to Slaver's Bay that she ended up doing to King's Landing, and it was probably that story about her father that snapped her out of the blood lust more than anything else (those details were new to her).

The biggest flaw imo was how quickly she slid into full Mad Queen mode in Season 8. The slow burn pace of her evolution over most of the show suddenly shifted into overdrive - for no clear reason.

reply

There haven't been plenty of signs. What show have you been watching? Any hand would have talked their queen/king out of questionable behaviour. How many times did Ned have to talk Robert down from his kill order on Dany? Same with Davos with Stannis. As for what happened in Slaver's Bay, she had every right. She was under attack. If you notice when she atop Drogon withe Viserion and Rhaegal did a strategic strike on the slavers' ships. She didn't indiscriminately "burn them all".

reply

No, but her original plan was to destroy a bunch of the other cities. Tyrion had to point out to her that these were cities, full of innocent people who would burn along with the slavemasters, then tell her the story of why Jaime killed her father, something she hadn't heard before.

A lot of the things she's done fall into the category of necessary ruthlessness. This is a world where leaders must show strength and punish betrayal or they lose their authority. But Dany has always had that impulse to overreact. Her progression along the same path her father took (he wasn't always the insane tyrant he became) has spanned most of the series and been quite gradual - until this season, when they rushed it into fast forward. Indeed it wasn't clear that her better side wouldn't win out in the end.

I'm just saying this was always a possible future for Dany. It may even be what happens in the books GRRM may or may not ever finish. A little more time taken setting it up would've made her breaking bad a little less jarring, that's all.

No signs of madness, huh? Check this out, Coleburg83: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5FkfgD234c

That video will say whatever it needs to in order to prove their unproven point. Dany showed no different judgement than Jon, Ned, Robert, Robb, etc. Cersei is the mad queen, but suddenly they gave her a pass this season. Clearly making her more sentimental than she has been in the past three seasons. They swapped Cersei's madness and applied it stupidly to Dany. She has never been whacko. As for ordering people killed, what did Robert command Ned to do to Dany? What did Robb command his troops to do? What did Cersei command The Mountain to do with the Sparrows?

reply

I believe the video more than you, Prom. After all, it's hard to argue with clips from the TV show.

reply

I can't believe how many people are disillusioned, I've seen this coming for years. She was just too good to be true.

She's related to the Mad King..so yeah there were clues. Besides what she did..was she snapped. and many people who show no signs ever of being mad..snap and go as they say POSTAL. Losing her men in battle (she's seen that before) but losing two people who were her closest friends and then Jon's betrayal...well I wonder how many of us would NOT snap in her place having that much power. I don't think she was mad as in she needs to be in a looney bin..I think her inner child (and she's always been a child) who just SNAPPPED.
