Yep, if HBO announced that they are canning Season 7 canon, rewriting and reshooting Season 7 and 8, both with 10 episodes, to fit the narrative of Seasons 1-6, it would be the greatest news since sliced bread.
Sure, Season 7 had some good moments, but when you go from Season 6 and seeing Dany's massive armies & fleet, to Season 7 you realize how stupid Dany's battle strategy is. Why would you sail to Dragonstone when you can just land all your forces in Dorne and Highgarden, and then march northwards conquering and accepting 'bent knees' as you go north. Conquer King's Landing on the way up, kill Cersei and the Mountain, take Casterly Rock and the Stormlands, and keep moving north. Acquire new potential allies in Riverrun, the Twins, and the Eyrie, and keep marching north.
Instead she lands on Dragonstone, loses nearly all her ships, loses Dorne and Highgarden, gains Casterly Rock--except the place looks like a slum, loses a Dragon in an effort to "convince Cersei", I can't think of anything more ridiculous than that, and handing over a dragon to the Night King.
The entire "Convince Cersei" premise is utterly ridiculous.
Instead of taking her dragons and flying out to Euron and wiping out his entire fleet, she kills a small Lannister convoy, but only after the Reach gold is already past the gates of King's Landing, and safely in Cersei's hands, and the Iron Bank, which she then uses to buy 20,000 Golden Company soldiers which are going to be stupid in Season 8.
Meanwhile, Euron continues to sail up and down the Narrow Sea without fear, at this point it won't surprise me if HBO puts him on the Iron Throne before the end of the series.

Well Season 5 and 6 were not great either, imo worse than 7. I mean Dorne, the Iron Islands, All Sansa plots, season 6 Arya, post resurrection Jon and Battle of Bastards set up was all very terrible and had little pay off. As soon as they ran out of book material and everything they changed from the books has been seriously dumb down.
In regards to Dany's moves; I think she was trying to 'copy' Aegon the conqueror by taking Dragon Stone and then moving to Kings Landing. The rest of the plan was not terrible if she didn't want to burn kings landing to the ground sacking the city with Dorne and High Garden forces would look better than a foreign army. It was not a good plan though because a military plan needs to be flexible and subject to change as new information is recieved. Right after the Iron Fleet made its first appearance the forces should have all consolidated on land and avoid all sea travel; and use all remaining forces to sack kings landing. The Iron fleet changed things and they did nothing to adjust the plan. That was stupid but they are not military leaders and advisors; this is why Jaime and Randel Tarly were more effective in Strategy. The only losing point was Dany has the dragon wild card she can play at will.
Yes the "convince Cersei" was stupid and the plan was stupid, I agree. It was necessary to get a dragon north and to make the dragon pit scene a reality. It was every bit as bad as the Rickon storyline in Season 6.
She suggested riding out and wiping out his fleet, but Tyrion told her she could be wondering around forever. They should have staged a small attack for Euron to bring his fleet to than unleash the dragons on it, but again she and her advisors are not military leaders.

Season 5 was indeed the worst. But season 6 was still an improvement. Danny's advisor's aren't military leaders, but they're definitely not stupid either. They're advise, or lack there of was uncharacteristically stupid.

Yes season 5 and 6 were both bad, though had some good story lines and good scenes. For example most of Jon's story in season 5 I thought was really good; in some ways better than the books.
If I remember the books correctly Jon himself barely ever faces off with the army of the dead. Can someone verify this, from what I remember Jon has never even scene a white walker and only Sam has killed one. The only one I remember Jon facing off against was the one that burned his hand. So Hardhome I thought was a very good addition to his story and giving him more of a reason to really need to team up with the wildlings. Although I like the books better for Alister Thorne not being involved in the assassination, i think it simplified his character too much in the show and made him a cliche bad guy.
I think their advice was bad but not necessarily stupid. If Dany and they really wanted to appear to be the good guys, if appearances are important to them; burning a majority of Kings Landing with Dragon fire would not accomplish that. Their plan was as good as it could be at first given their objectives. It was stupid I agree to not try to drastically alter the plan after the Greyjoy attack. That was a game changer and they did nothing about it. So yeah that was uncharacteristically stupid. But not as uncharacteristically stupid as the Martells and Sand Snakes in season 5 and 6 or as uncharacteristically stupid as Roose in season 6. Or as uncharacteristically stupid as nearly the entire north lords and Sansa in season 6. And Tyrion has been uncharacteristically stupid since the end of season 4. So that was not new either.
At least Jon has been rather consistently stupid throughout the series.
