Similar films?

I loved this movie: haunting, reflective, poetic even. Dark as hell. It totally confounded my expectations.

Any recommendations for similarly nihilistic films?

Also, really recommended:

"Far North" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0860866/

Haunting.

I'm surprised nobody has suggested Severed Ways, which is very much like this (right down to the metal soundtrack, strong silent Vikings, and incomprehensible plot).

reply

I agree. It's like someone asking for films like "Tornado" and no one mentions "Twister"

Severed Ways even has the same big red font that appears before each chapter...

reply

I absolutely agree. Although the first part is quite different. The second part is almost a re-enactment of Severed Ways.

To all those looking for a similar movie - without too many gruesome fight scenes and a little more beauty & contemplation & not to forget, a nice wholesome excreta scene

Severed Ways

is the movie to watch.

Well i don't think you can go past VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, it has exactly the same apocalyptic/nihilistic surrealism but it focuses more on cannibalistic urges - to which i was surprised wasn't look at in Valhalla Rising. funny it wasn't until i read your post that i looked at the recommendations from IMDB - Men in black??

Reminded me quite a bit of Werner Herzog's film "Aguirre: The Wrath of God"

reply

Sort of an anti-Apocalyptica.

Senor, senor,
Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or armageddon?

when it comes to introspective monologues nothing comes close to terrence malick's work. similar as well in a way they both focus on nature.

I've just watched the 2008 film Sauna http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1124394/ and I'd have to say although it's more of a horror film (though only marginally, it's arguable how much the horror is 'real' in the film's world), there was quite a lot of feelings of similarity, in the bleak mood, the visuals, the costumes, setting, abstract ending, themes of religious redemption and madness. In fact funnily enough the UK DVD version is called Evil Rising. I think many Valhalla Rising fans would enjoy it.

And hasn't got as many "OMG LIKE WORST MOVIE EVA!!1!11! MADE NO SENSE!", IMDB message board posts as VR even though its similarly abstract, since it found its proper audience better by being a foreign language film.
