I loved this movie: haunting, reflective, poetic even. Dark as hell. It totally confounded my expectations.

Any recommendations for similarly nihilistic films?

I watched a movie on Netflix a while ago called Escape that reminded me a lot of this one. Period piece, Scandinavian scenery, minimalist character/plot development, strong atmosphere of tension (though Escape has more action). I wouldn't call it nihilistic, though.

Not sure why someone hasn't mentioned it earlier, but the Revenant was the first movie I thought of when I saw this post.

"Sun Choke", by Ben Cresciman. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3395582/

Many parallels between the two, though not re story/plot. Both "Valhalla Rising" and "Sun Choke" had the same effect on me.

Ignorance is bliss... 'til it posts on the Internet, then, it's annoying.

This film kinda reminded me of The Revenant with its random scenes of violence and use of natural locations.
