Frontier(s) vs. Eden lake vs. Inside vs. Martyrs

Its simple, this is a fatal 4 way showdown between 4 modern horror movies that a lot of people keep talking about and are saying good things about them, so which one of these four would you add to your collection?

reply

I have all of them but Inside (and still haven't seen it) but they all win on different levels.

For the most intellectually engaging Martyrs wins hands down.

For the most mean-spirited of downbeat endings Eden Lake is the champ.

For great action sequences Frontiers is you flick.

Just finished watching Frontier(s), and I've already seen the other three. I'd rank 'em like so:

1. Martyrs (this messed me up for like a week; really compelling)
2. Inside (strangely beautiful; get's better and better the more I think about it)
3. Eden Lake (really suspenseful and hard-hitting)
4. Frontier(s) (the weakest of the four; strictly average)

reply

Completely agree with the above poster.

1. Martyrs. Incredible film. I can't praise it enough!
2. Inside. A superbly brutal, twisted and gory horror.
3. Eden Lake. Not perfect but great suspense and really gets you rooting for the characters.
4. Frontier(s). Disappointing. Lacked originality, somewhat forgettable really...

I was expecting a long time for this.. hehe here is my top 4 countdown

*English is not my primary language

1. Martyrs 9/10 : Probably the most shocking movie I have seen in years.
2. Frontière(s) 7.5/10 : Maybe not that original, but the director definitely have talent.
3. À l'intérieur 5/10 : Disturbing, but it has this zombie cop, you know, that zombie cop :P
4. Eden Lake : I don't get all the praise. The strangers and Ils/Them were more efficient and exploiting similar themes.

Frontier(s) vs. Eden lake vs. Inside vs. Martyrs

Ok Inside is the best easily.
Second I'll go for Eden Lake, then Martyrs, then Frontiers.
I havent seen Martyrs for awhile, but I think I like Eden Lake better.

1. Martyrs. Beautiful, disturbing.

2. Inside. Gorefest.
3. Eden Lake. Average. Cool ending though.
4.Frontier(s). Boring.

reply

I have yet to watch Inside.

Frontier(s) is just fun. I love the Nazi family and the senseless over the top gore.

Eden Lake is one of the most disturbing horror movies I#ve seen recently. Sometimes it goes a little bit too far to be believable, but overall it works great.

Martyrs is a pretentious pile of garbage that takes itself way too seriuosly, and for some reason people believe it's clever. Horrible movie.

reply

Wow of all the films mentioned here - this is my opinion

Inside - not seen so wont comment
Martyrs - started to watch and it seemed boring... maybe give it a chance later
High Tension - again started to watch...was it meant to be a comedy?
Eden Lake - the most realistic and believable nastiness in a film for ages - some cheer out loud moments when the victimised woman runs over the chav girl and stabs the boy
Frontier(s) - a fun little movie but not really believable - the first big giveaway is hot slutty women giving away sex (as if that happens)- IMHO if you are Muslim this will probably be the closest you can get to hell...sluts, nazis and pigs

Audition got mentioned...one of the most over-rated movies of all time...*beep* its a non scary non disturbing torture porn thing

I added all 4 to my collection. If I had to pick just one it would be a toss up between Eden Lake and Martyrs. I would probably end up with Eden Lake since it is a bit easier to rewatch and if I am adding to a collection I would guess rewatchability is important.

reply

Personally, I found Eden Lake to be the most rewatchable

I've seen Martyrs Inside and Eden Lake and think they're all brilliant as they were so powerful which some people consider too brutal

Do guys like "the thing"?
They like it better than no thing.

reply

Martyrs was leaps and bounds above this tripe, which is kinda funny, because I thought the French were "above" copying major aspects of other films (which is what basically happened here), unlike in Amerika. BTW, I am American, so the Seinfeld Jewish/dentist rule applies to me, so please don't attack, LOL.

Just sayin'...

Interesting to see that even now since I started this post MARTYRS is still winning with EDEN LAKE and INSIDE both as strong runners up while FRONTIER(S) seems stuck at the bottom of the barrel.

On a side note: Are the french still making horror movies or have they abandoned the genre completely? Because after MARTYRS its like the french horror trend just went dead. Figuratively speaking.
