Frontier(s) vs. Eden lake vs. Inside vs. Martyrs

Its simple, this is a fatal 4 way showdown between 4 modern horror movies that a lot of people keep talking about and are saying good things about them, so which one of these four would you add to your collection?

reply

I've seen all of them. I'd say

1) Martyrs
2) Eden Lake
3) Inside
4) Frontière(s)

reply

I saw INSIDE yesterday and boy was it sick, but so far out of the three I've seen I'd say

1) MARTYRS
2) FRONTIER(S)
3) INSIDE

reply

if we are gonna do all french movies we have to add Irreversible which is better then all of them .

1.Irreversible
2.Martyrs
3.Inside
4.Frontiers

reply

No problem here, looks like I have another one to add to my list, anyone feel free to add IRREVERSIBLE, see how it matches up to the four already mentioned.

Probably because MARTYRS is the only one out of the bunch that messes with a persons head, I'm still waiting to see EDEN LAKE but that's my reason for liking MARTYRS, INSIDE was pureley sick, the people who made it must have been on some seriously potent meds, then again who am I kidding you could possibly say the same about the other three.

Irreversible is my favorite french film so far

Well, MARTYRS seems to be losing ground finally and INSIDE and EDEN LAKE are moving up, FRONTIER(S) is still a none mover.

However, yours truly has decided to pass on IRREVERSIBLE, despite the fact that I've seen some mean horror films which include the four films in competition right now, the idea of sitting through a 10 minute rape scene is taking it a little too far, I like my horror true but for me and anybody else that decides not to see it I doubt that we'll miss anything.

reply

Irreversible was a crap movie, with a extended realistic rape scene, and a over the top head bashing scene. Are you looking for shock or overall movie quality?

Irreversible was in no way scary or horror, yes the woman being raped was awful, but if thats all you have to sell a movie on....

Martyrs 9
Inside 8
Irreversible 7 (a high 7, as it was better than Eden Lake)
Eden Lake 7 (a low 7, as it wasn't as good as Irreversible)
Frontier(s) 6

reply

seen all, all good. Martyrs without a doubt the best and was the most memorable.

I've just bought Frontiers, but have yet to watch it. I'm also interested in watching the other three, as I love horror films. I hate torture films, so which of these should I avoid? (I'm fine with violence, blood etc. just the Hostel/Saw-like torure films I wish to avoid)

"I wished Her back but the dead adored Her, Even wild winds sang in chora for Her"

reply

MARTYRS is a definate no-no for you then, if torture-type films are not your type - although it is, by far, the best of the bunch here......

reply

Thank you, I'l stay clear of it then (because of the torure scene). What about the other three?

"I wished Her back but the dead adored Her, Even wild winds sang in chora for Her"

reply

Just watched Eden Lake. Although it had a torture scene, it wasn't prolonged or too graphic. It when they start cutting hands/legs/finger off in graphic ways that make me uneasy.

"I wished Her back but the dead adored Her, Even wild winds sang in chora for Her"

reply

so far i only got through martyrs...as the 3rd guy said, its gonna be strictly comedy or lighter stuff for some time for me now...it looks like frontier(s) is next on the chopping block for me though- the plot doesnt make it seem like something that would be too too bad....

BTW, im sure alot of you guys have seen it based on these 4, but idk if its been mentioend here--the japanese film audition? how do you think that stacks up

reply

Hey g n r007,

'Audition' - although not a French torture film, as being discussed in the thread, still a worthy film and well worth watching.

Two words - cheese wire.....

Really a good contest!!!

I have seen each movie many times i lovvvve them... But French horrors are way better than british or american horrors

My Voting

INSIDE
MARTYRS
EDEN LAKE
FRONTIER(S)

Hey brothers and sisters and cousins or whom ever I may or may not be related to, I have finally seen all four of these monsters and here is my vote.

MARTYRS: The most original and psycologically disturbing film of the bunch

EDEN LAKE: A voilent film that shows a high degree of intelegence and the best character development I've seen in a horror film.

FRONTIER(S): Not the most original film out there as it derives a lot from films like THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE etc. the film does however create a lot of atmosphere and pulls you right into the middle of the chaos making it a very tense movie experience.

INSIDE: Lots of gore and one very sick ending, of course that's what you'd expect or want to see from a horror film, but to coin a phrase "To much of one thing isn't always a good thing" this film has a lot of gore, in fact its probably safe to say this the goriest of the whole bunch and after a while the gore becomes a little to much and appeared more overdone, good things I can say about this film is is that the cinematography is great, the film succeeds in creating atmosphere and building a reasonable amount of tension.

PS. To answer reighn in blood's question as to how does MARTYRS mess with your head, you need to watch it with a long attention span to realize just how it does, if you don't watch it with a long attention span and your brain is turned off, MARTYRS will have nothing to mess with.

Martyrs: My personal favorite of the bunch. Just such a powerful, powerful film. Packs the biggest whallop. At the end you're totally in awe of what you just watched. Simply a perfect piece of cinema. My favorite horror film ever. (10/10)

Eden Lake: My runner-up, but not by much. Like Martyrs (and Frontiers and Inside too) it left me completely drained. Like someone just ripped my heart out. It left me angry and dazed and bewildered for days and it's been the reaction of every person I've watched it with. One of my friends even cried as the credits were rolling. (10/10)

Frontiers: Probably a spot behind Eden Lake on my favorite horror list. Sure it's not wholly original, but contrary to most movies who have such displays of graphic violence, this one doesn't falter in acting, direction, cinematography or anything. It seems to be the least favored of the foursome and I cannot fathom as to why.(10/10)

Inside: Definitely my least favorite, and the only one that didn't wow me and the only one that didn't leave me talking/thinking about it dayd after the initial viewing. I found Sarah to be a total brat, the first 40-odd minutes before she's assaulted she's a complete brat. That and when the cops were introduced it spiraled downward. Plus... has this lady ever heard of adoption??? Anyway, still a quality flick and I garuntee you'll never see anything else like it. (7.5/10)

I own all four proudly and would recommend all to any fan of extreme horror.

Eden lake.

Inside is the cream of the crop. there is no better "scary" movie.

I have seen all of them.

I vote for Inside!

2nd Martyrs
3rd Frontiéres and Eden Lake

reply

I vote Inside as well... Eden Lake feels out of place on this list, but Martyrs would follow right behind Inside, with Frontiere(s) and Eden Lake on an equal but still good third =)

(I've reviewed all of them but Eden Lake on my blog http://tendermary.blogspot.com/)

Congratulations! on a scale of perversity from 1-10, you just hit a 74.

reply

Martyrs 9/10
Á l'intérier 8/10
Eden Lake 7,5/10
Frontière(s) 5/10

Frontière(s) doesn't really fit in this selection, quality-wise, it was mediocre at best. Nothing we haven't seen before (and better) countless of times. The other three are absolutely excellent and disturbing.

reply

My vote goooes to...A l'interieur...
oh mon dieu La femme...! It is surely the BEST gory film :)
And the acting of the two leads was beyond superb!!

reply

Eden Lake- obviously the best film of the 4 IMO, dark, violent, depressing, and terrifying, Eden Lake pulls you right in, you really care for the main characters and HATE the bad guys.

Inside was also very scary, and also probably the dirtiest and goriest film of the 4. Inside was fast, brutal, gory and unstoppable, I like Inside, I have never seen a film quite like it.

Martyrs was interesting, a viscious movie, with a black soul, solid acting and even an interesting (if slightly contrived) plot twist near the end. Personally I did not like it very much because for my taste its a little bit TOO viscious, but interesting it was.

Frontiers is the worst movie of all 4. Sure it has its obligatory gory moments of torture, pain, screaming, and revenge, but we have seen it all before. Even in its finest (and to some, goriest) moments it is incredibly boring, lifeless, and clichéd. Frontiers is like the previous 3 (much better) films wrapped in one ugly, yawn worthy package.
