shareSort of. They race-swap the main character and his grandmother to blacks. Apart from that, it doesn’t have any overt anti-white or anti-male messaging - white characters are not routinely demonised and the evil witches are multiracial.
I’ll also add that the actress who plays the grandmother is excellent and really elevates the whole film.
It’s somewhere between a perfectly crafted Zemeckis classic and a throwaway Hollywood CGI kids film. The witches look absolutely horrific and will surely torment the children for whom this film is intended - just like the great children’s films of old. Overall I liked it, but won’t be buying it.
it was trash, and the grandmother was overacting - a lot. This film was by no means credible, funny or necessary. A waste of money, talent and fans who adore Roald Dahl. What is this trend to steal the heroes of several generations of children. Every child (and later the adult) is entitled to heroes who lit up their lifes while growing up. This was mere blasphemy, imho
shareThe grandmother was great. The rest of the film was a mixed bag, as I described. The 1990 film was better, although this one actually honoured the original ending which was a pleasant surprise.
