Paramount Expands ‘Star Trek’ Universe With New Film, Toby Haynes Tapped To Direct With Seth Grahame-Smith Writing

Even as it continues to develop the final chapter in its main Star Trek series, Paramount is looking to further explore the IP. The studio has tapped Toby Haynes to direct a new film that expands on the Star Trek universe, with Seth Grahame-Smith penning the script. J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot is producing.

Sources tell Deadline that while plot details are being kept under wraps, the project is an origin story that takes place decades before the 2009 Star Trek film that rebooted the franchise. Insiders add that the final chapter in that main series, Star Trek 4, remains in active development.

Although there hasn’t been a film since 2016’s Star Trek Beyond, the brand remains as strong as its ever been behind popular Paramount+ shows like Picard and Strange New Worlds earning strong reviews and solid ratings. The Brian Robbins led-Paramount saw an opportunity to build on that popularity with multiple films in development the same way its streaming arm had multiple shows going at once.

In doing so, the studios hands over the reins to two individuals familiar with dealing with major IP. Haynes was the main director on the Star Wars series Andor, which has become one of the more critically acclaimed series in that own universe since Lucasfilm began developing series for Disney+. Andor is up for eight Emmys on Monday including Best Drama Series.

Smith made his big break as a novelist with hits like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and has since turned into one of the go-to writer-producers in the genre and fanboy worlds. His credits include producing It and penning The Lego Batman Movie.

The writing is the most important thing. And, at this point, I find it hard to believe that a new Star Trek movie will stray far from the dismal crap that I consider the Abrams films to be. They were decently directed and had a great cast and excellent effects... Good music even. Just not the movies I was looking for.

I've given up on Strange New Worlds but I can imagine them deriving a worthwhile movie from the general style of that show. I mean, this does sound like what they are talking about as a... prequel... to the Abrams films... So. Some faint hope?

Of course, this is the writer that shoveled shit all over Dark Shadows.

Toby Haynes “begged” to direct Trek episode of Black Mirror

At the end of 2017, the highly acclaimed Netflix anthology series Black Mirror released “USS Callister,” an homage to Star Trek complete with extended sections set on a starship (the USS Callister) in a very Star Trek-like universe. With a runtime of 76 minutes, the episode feels like a TV-movie, still fitting into the Black Mirror tone with dark twists tied into commentaries on modern technology and society. “USS Callister” was critically acclaimed; it earned 7 Emmy nominations and 4 wins, including Outstanding Television Movie of 2018. It was nominated for several other awards, including a Hugo and a BAFTA, and was directed by Toby Haynes, Paramount’s latest pick to direct a Star Trek feature film.

“USS Callister” was awful. What is the deal with "Todd" and why he is given so many roles in movies. I hate his ugly face.

I have next to zero faith this will be any good.
