Worst character on the Show?

I thought of just starting a thread on how much I disliked Pete, but why not make it general and ask who everyone found to be their least favorite, on 30 Rock?

For me, Pete was just so DULL. His neurosis was not amusing in any way. I guess he was supposed to be the "straight man" to the group, mostly anyway. But nothing else worked in his favor.

Poor Scott Adsit, playing such an uninteresting character on such a great show, for seven years! Even his story in the finale was waaah-waaah.

for some reason i hated toofer a lot. hazel was lame as well

I've just finished season 5, and I cannot stand Kenneth. While other characters are slapsticky, exaggerated or over-the-top frequently, Kenneth is just flat out stupid all the time.

I like the writers as a group. I would have loved to see one episode just about their shenanigans.

Speaking of Toofer; I know this is comedy, but it seems unlikely in an office that people would call him that to his face.

I've known people in offices who have had nicknames, like one guy who was called Basil after the character in Fawlty Towers. However, it was only used behind his back.

-But this was a COMEDY writing room, so there was that lenience for political incorrectness. It wasn't vicious. They weren't making fun of him being black.

reply

I knew somebody would object on those grounds so I tried to qualify my statement. Ok, duly noted. I've never worked in an environment like that.

I still think that although his colleagues in the room would call him that, Jack probably wouldn't.

reply

And fyi, I'm not trying to defend it on personal grounds. I simply think it makes sense!, considering the work environment and people involved. Like I said, it wasn't rude or demeaning. A little facetious, yes. But not demeaning.

"Pete" (SCOTT ADSIT) was---to me----incredibly cool, and a major part of the handful of things that were consistently right with "30 Rock"! I especially liked the exchange between "Pete" and "Liz" where--I think---"Liz" is trying to remember the name of one of "Pete"s children, so she questions him with "Which one of your kids are you afraid of again?" I realize that's more of a good "Liz" line, but it is also completely symptomatic of "Pete"s sad-sack mentality! I had problems with much of "30 Rock" throughout the years, but SCOTT ADSIT was not one!

reply

I don't have anything against Pete, I just think he was written poorly. You can have a "sad sack" still be interesting somehow. Pete just wasn't ever interesting to me...

reply

Yes. The whole thing with Pete as the put-upon tragic foil just never worked. They never could make the character work when he was given sole focus for a plot arc. But he had some great moments working off of the other characters, like Jack. Remember the scene where Liz shotguns the pizza? "She's unhinging her jaw!" Or when Pete's wife thinks that he and Liz are having an affair and "welcomes" Liz into their love live?

Jonathan

7 years 64 episodes

Never more than a nasty gay stereotype.

reply

Hazel is still the worst for me but after her it would be Danny. That character added absolutely nothing to the show but I blame the writers for that and not Cheyenne Jackson.

Hazel. I like Kristen Schaal, but Hazel was just uninteresting in so many ways.

reply

I didn't like Hazel at first, but upon repeat viewings I actually don't think she's bad. She wasn't necessary, but she didn't chew the scenery either:

Is seventy a bad IQ???

You think I'm a fragile girl?? I've been in tons of car accidents!

LOL

reply

to give her any nice side, at least thru season 3.
