Who Else Loves Ed Harris As The Man In Black?

In episode 2.7, there was a real possibility of Black William buying the proverbial farm, and that may still come to pass. That started me thinking. Black William, the CHARACTER, is a despicable self-loathing scumbag whose own daughter thinks he is trying to commit passive suicide by continuing to play the Westworld game; but he is also a fascinating personality and character study. Ed Harris, the ACTOR PLAYING Black William, is pure gold. We are all happy that Anthony Hopkins is back on display, though I think the show moved along just fine without the Ford character. What happens when/if William takes a dirt nap? Do you realize that Harris is 67 years old? Look at how much vigor he puts into a role that has no small amount of physicality to it. Look at how he can even make us care about this antagonist. Look at how he can even inject wry humor into the part. The guy is gifted. It’s a real treat having him and Hopkins together on the same magnificently-written series (with a, largely, superlative supporting cast). I think Harris’s role is more demanding than Hopkins’, and that his departure, if it happens, will be a loss hard to replace.

Totally agree I’ve been a fan of The Man in Black from the beginning. If you’re an Ed Harris fan I’m guessing you’ve seen Appaloosa?

Ive been listening to the podcast “Doesn’t Sound Like Anything to Me” recap the show and one of the hosts made a funny comment about TMIB. When Mave attacks William at the farm it’s because she is remembering TMIB stabbing her and shooting her daughter. I’m paraphrasing the quote “This is why you never black hat through your first play through in a game. You white hat first so the hosts have a favorable recollection of your character.” I found this amusing because I can relate to it. When gaming, I’m usually the good/ virtuous guy first time around then an evil bastard the second play through. It also makes TMIB more sympathetic to me because in his mind, he’s always been playing a game where no real harm is done to anyone living which is a good thing.
