This is in no particular order because there are too many scary moments to rank.

The Exorcist: The flashes of the face of the devil throughout the movie. Also, the Spider walk scene.
Eraserhead: The entire movie. Nightmares abundant. Probably the worst scene is when that horrible baby is being ripped apart and is vomiting blood.
The Descent: When you first see the Cave Dwellers in the night vision camera.
The Haunting('63) : The doors bending in from the power outside.
The Sixth Sense: The scene leading up to the vomiting girl.
Poltergeist: The face peeling scene.
Mulholland Drive: Winkie's Diner.
The Exorcism of Emily Rose: Exorcism scene.
The Last House on the Left: Disembowlment in the forest.
The Alphabet: A short film by David Lynch. It's pretty much a five minute nightmare. Watch it on youtube. The ending scares me so much and it's almost hard to describe why.
Audition: The horrible bag. D:
28 Days Later: The scene with Selena in the kitchen where the zombie runs in through the window.

There are many, many more.

*spoilers abound*

Brazil: Those baby-mask things! They're just... they're just creepy as hell! And the end where Jonathan Pryce is locked up in that straight jacket, and one pops out at him up close... damn it, the whole scene just gives me shivers. And I saw the thing at midnight, and then that night when I was had to go to bed all alone in my apartment I was actually terrified that those things would come out after me.

Candyman: When Tony Todd is coughing out all those bees. I've HATED bees since I was 6 years old, and seeing them all swarm out of him...

Creepshow: "Where's my cake!?" Tom Savini's make-up job for the zombie-dad does wonders here.

The Evil Dead: ..........You know what, *beep* it. The entire movie's messed up. I saw the final few minutes of this movie on the Sci-Fi in '95 and it freaked me out. I finally saw it again 9 years later, and guess what? It's still messed up! Anybody watching this the first time and used to the later elements of the franchise are going to get the shock of their lives. This isn't the more darkly comedic Army-Of-Darkness esque world. Ash isn't the idiotic, cocky goofball we know and love. This movie is terrifying!

Evil Dead 2: I know it's a bit cheap, but Ash suddenly turning into a deadite and attacking the other two people made me jump. The last thing you expect is the main hero turning evil.

Halloween 3: I know a lot/most of the fans hate this, but the lady that tinkers with the Silver Shamrock logo and gets zapped by it as a result is the only time in all 9 films that's actually genuinely frightened me. Her face definitely got smashed in with an ugly stick.

Nightmare on Elm Street: Tina's death is probably a highlight of the scariest scene for most people, but the worst of it for me is right before Freddy kills her, she winds up ripping his face off, revealing his skull. Freddy then gives this laugh that's... I can't actually describe it, but the closest I can give is that of a hyena merged with Satan himself. Robert Englund just completely nailed that whole spot, and I still can't believe they're recasting for a remake. Billy Bob Thorton is good and all, but there's only one Freddy Kruger.

Nightmare on Elm Street 4: When Debbie is turned into a roach. The worst of it is how she winds up being turned, with her face, arms, etc being literally ripped off... it's just so unsettling.

Pet Sematary: Anytime Zelda is on screen *shivers*.

Poltergeist: Everything from and after the clown attack. Plus when the guy peels his face off.

Psycho: The true "face" of Mother. I have to say, for a movie that's 40 years old, that corpse is really disgusting even today with all the cinema advancements. The skull appearing over Norman's face at the very end is also creepy as hell.

The Shining: "Come play with us Danny"; Room 237; Shelly Duvall seeing what redrum really means in the mirror

Star Trek: First Contact: Picard's nightmare where the spike bursts out of his face. Also, the Borg were actually made scary in this, and not just because of the fact that they were suddenly pasty-faced Ring style. We knew of them turning other races into Borg, but it was never done as horrifying as the this, as we saw this minute-or-so length scene with them transforming various crew members, literally stripping their humanity from them.....

The Sandman: A short film by Paul Berry. One of the most terrifying things I've ever seen.

Urban Legend: The bathroom chemicals being forced down the guy's throat.

Poltergeist: The face peeling scene.

Nightmare on Elm Street: Ohgeezeohgeezeohgeeze...Robert Englund's laugh. Hell, even Freddy Krueger's voice can make me freeze in cold, straight horror.

Open Water: The nighttime scene.

Maniac (1980) - Frank's graveyard hallucination & the ending sequence

Shutter - the original. there is at least 5 scenes in that movie that is on my top 10 list of scary moments.

reply

There's one particular scene that I ALWAYS think of when I find myself walking down a long, empty corridor. I saw The Exorcist III when I was pretty young...maybe 10 or 11? That scene when the nurse bites the dust in the hospital hallway? Yeah, that's the one. I've seen Exorcist III since then and now when I watch it, it's really rather ridiculous, but the fear I felt at 10 during that nurse scene always comes back to haunt me.

I remember it exactly, the nurse takes FOREVER to do her duties, walking back and forth, up and down the corridor. The scene is SO quiet...and then all of a sudden, BOOM! Something big and white comes out of one of the doors with what looks like a pair of hedge clippers.

I think the first time I saw it, I didn't even scream. I was in far too much shock. My heart was racing and it wouldn't stop for a long time. I turned to my sister and I said, "What...was...that?"

reply

Carrie-Carrie killing her mother
Saw II-The guying burning up in the oven
Michael Jackson's Thriller
Beloved-flash backs of the mother(I cant remember her name) being beaten and her milk being taken
this is from a tv show: The Tudors the guy being boiled alive
Hostel-the girl getting her face burned
6th Sense-when he is using the bathroom and the shadow passes in front of the door and when he looks up the staircase to see the corpses hanging from the ceiling
The House on Haunted Hill(remake)-the patient having surgery done on him while he's awake
Caroline's Skeleton-a young boy being executed in the electric chair. That traumatized me for years
The Golden Child-I saw this when I was 3 and I swear there is a scene where Eddie Murphy gets burned by a cigarette, that still screws with me to this day
House of Wax-Padelecki's character being alive and awake the entire time
Last of the Mohicans-Duncan being burned alive.

I don't care if you call me crazy...because the voices in my head tell me I'm just fine

reply

Spoorloos/The Vanishing - The end. I have an absolutely irrational fear of being buried alive and this just screwed with me for months after I saw it. So scary.

Jaws - I get a lot of crap for this one. The scene where Quint gets eaten got me. I was 6 or 7 the first time I saw the film and I had nightmares of sharks for years afterwards. To this day I still can't watch that scene.

Un Chien Andalou - The eyeball slicing. I really don't think I need to elaborate on this one.

Return of the Living Dead - The tar man. I saw this movie when I was a kid and, yeah, I lost a few nights of sleep because of it. However, looking
back the film is hysterically funny, but when you're a kid, it's scary stuff.

Dracula - Everyone sort of hails this as Bela Lugosi's film and that he is what makes it scary, but for me, personally, it was Dwight Frye that creeped me out. The scene on the ship where he's looking up from the galley really creeps me out for some reason. Keep in mind that I'm not putting Lugosi's performance down, but it was ultimately Frye who got to me more.

Jacob's Ladder - "Hello, is anybody home?!?" That's all I'm saying.

Repulsion - There is a scene where Catherine Deneuve is in the bathroom looking at her reflection and then there is a figure that sort of pops up behind her in the hallway. Scary stuff. Also the sudden cracks in the walls creeped me out too.

City of the Living Dead - The girl vomiting her guts up. Ew.

Evil Dead 2 - The people popping up from the floor boards screaming "dead by dawn!" Wood floors have never been so scary!

Irreversible - The entire film. It gave me the worst migraine I've ever had. It was so disturbing.

M. - "Ich muss!" Peter Lorre really understood the tragic villain before anyone else did. While I was watching it I hated him, but at the same time kind of felt bad for him. It also had that capital punishment end that I didn't expect for a film that old. Great movie all around though.

The Ring - The flashback scene with Amber Tamblyn in the closet. The way her head lurches forward really gave me the chills.

Friday the 13th - "Kill her, mommy." Screw everyone getting killed. That scared me more because it was SO psychotic!

A Very Long Engagement - I know. It's a WWI romance drama, but the opening shot of that film really creeped me out. That and the dead horse in the tree.

The Alphabet, House MD, Cabin Fever, and Eraserhead - Anytime there is someone vomiting blood, I'm out.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang - The childcatcher. He scared the Hell out of me when I was little.

Suspiria- The barb wire pit looked so painful. It's not gory or anything, but just knowing what it could do and how it would feel if you've ever seen real barb wire...yikes. Also the soundtrack is awesomely creepy. That hissing/chanting is so eerie.

Cutting Moments - The girl cutting her lips off. Oh God. I almost couldn't watch it. It was just so bad and gross. I...I can't even really formulate a sentence for what I saw. I can't really wrap my mind around it to this day. I couldn't watch past that scene to the genital mutilation scene.

Sleepaway Camp- The end/secret. It was the expression on her face that scared the Hell out of me. Thank God 'Robot Chicken' spoofed it and made it somewhat watchable now.

When A Stranger Calls(not the crappy remake) - The entire first 15 minutes. It's scary because it's so realistic. It could totally happen!

The Exorcist 3 - I saw all of the Exorcist films and this was the only one to scare me. It's the white ghost/garden shears scene in the hospital. It's so unexpected and that's what got me. Didn't expect it at all!

Don't Look Now - The end in the warehouse with the midget. Frightening stuff right there.

reply

reply

To me, it's always the classics that scared me

Texas Chainsaw Masscure (1974)- I forgot how bat-*beep* crazy this movie is. The moment i remember that scared me lately was the part where the boyfriend or somebody finds this chick in the fridge and she wakes up with her eyes looking freaky and that music comes on.

Alice sweet alice- I know someone has said this before but the moment where she's in the warehouse and alice pulls off her mask to show a creepier mask. I remember seeing part of the mask on 100 scariest movie moments and every time it shows that part now, i get out of the room

The shining- I do not... i repeat... DO NOT... need to explain this one.

Jacob's ladder- I can't really say. this whole movie is one big scary moment.

Quartine- you may hate this movie but it's been a long time since my heart pounded as much as it was when i was watching the last scene.

The Wicker Man (1973)- The ending and that "hands of glory". The hand part doesn't really scare me anymore but the ending is strange. It's one of those where you don't know how to feel.

At last but not least

100 scariest movie moments- Is it just me or can this show make anything scary ? Even Willy *BEEP*ING Wonka could creep you out
