Some scenes were in extremely poor taste

Having just recently viewed "Another Gay Movie" on video,' I must admit the film did succeed as a comic spoof on the heterosexual teen sex movie genre, e.g., "American Pie," "Porky's," "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," etc. Generally speaking, most of the move depicted a similar brand of crude and raunchy sexual humor that it's hetero counterparts are well-known for.

However, the director noted in the film's commentary that some viewers (gay and straight) were offended by many aspects of the film. The director defended the controversial content in the name of "pushing artistic boundaries and leaving political correctness at the door."

Well, I also took offense to some scenes and would challenge the director's lame defense for several reasons. But first, let me identify some offending scenes:

1. The scene in the gay bar where the two old men ask the Griff character his age and state that he was way passed his prime age at 17 (a clear reference to pedophilia).

2. The scene where Andy's father reveals that he's bisexual and then proceeds to pursue a man into public restroom for sex.

3. The sex scene between the Andy character and his teacher.

The reason such scenes are offensive is partly because they appeal to the harmful characterization that homosexuals are perverse and behave without any boundaries of decency. Furthermore, the message such scenes send is that everything in the pursuit of gay sexual fulfillment is fine. No action or behavior is ever wrong or inappropriate when it comes to gay sex.

Too often in the name of "pushing the artistic envelop" gay directors make the mistake of communicating that any and every behavior as acceptable. But I would argue that there is nothing even remotely funny about suggesting that gay individuals condone pedophilia, that it's ok for a gay teacher to have sex with a teenager or that it's acceptable for a married man, in the pursuit of sexual freedom, to cheat on his wife -- right in from of his own son no less.

Exploiting such behavior for mere laughs ignores the damage such images do to the larger depiction of gay individuals in society by perpetuating these vile and harmful stereotypes. It's bad enough that there is a hateful anti-gay crowd that already equates homosexually with the most base human behavior imaginable. Gay directors and writers should be the last people to validate such prejudiced and homophobic beliefs.

As someone said earlier (they didn't explain) the older guys in the gay bar are part of NAMBLA, North American Man/Boy Love Association. Now in this case, and please don't bite my head off because i am in no way advocating pedophilia, the kid is near 18 and pretty consensual. Obviously allot of people are uncomfortable with that sort of age difference in a relationship, but he isn't really a child in anything but a legal sense. And of course as other people have said its a comedy that is supposed to be in a little bit of poor taste. Personally i don't think the thing about Andy's Dad being Bi did anything for the story, it just didn't really seem funny, it was just weird but it wasn't really in bad taste.

p.s. does anyone think that Andy's mom (lypsinka, whoever that is) looking like a kinda tranny is wierd. Just wondering...

OK, I watched it, I'm gay. I thought it was absolutely hilarious, although I'll admit I raised my eyebrows a couple of times. Its just playing on stereotypes and turning it into comedy. I thought it was funny.

With that said, its ok to be offended by it. I think a rational part of me wanted to be at some points but then I remembered its all in the spirit of comedy!

Erm....for a start having sex with a 17 year old isnt paedophilia.
I dont know about your country but over here the age of consent is 16, so 17 is a consenting adult. And even so, for it to be considered paedophilia the individual must be not sexually mature, which is around the 10-14 area, so even if 17 is below your ago of consent, it doesnt make it paedophilia.

Lypsinka is a fairly famous drag queen in NYC, as in a man in woman's clothes. So, yeah, she's gonna look kinda 'tranny.' That's part of the joke.

I am very concerned with the portrayals of LGBT people in the media. But this is obviously an over-the-top (and hilarious) comedy. In the past, LGBT characters were shown to be murderers and psychos, and they were depicted that way in SERIOUS WORKS OF ART. And not only were they depicted that way, but they were shown to be psychotic BECAUSE they were gay. And furthermore, no positive or neutral protrayals of LGBT characters existed to counter it.

That is not the climate in Hollywood today. We still have some troubled gay characters (Steve Carrel in Little Miss Sunshine for example), but they just happen to be gay, their troubles aren't shown to be a direct result of their sexual orientation. That's the difference. It's the difference between a one-dimensional stereotype that goes completely unquestioned and an honest portrayal of a gay person who happens to have problems in their life. And yes, we are humans, we do have problems just like anyone else. I don't want to pretend like we are perfect when we're not.

Another Gay Movie is a send-up, it made fun of the stereotypes as much as it portrayed them. And it is SO over the top, that if any straight person seriously believes that's how gay people behave, then that straight person is a goddamn moron and should be shot.

I thought the movie was just plain bad. I couldn't watch the whole thing, I didn't really find any of the scenes poor taste but it did seem like...they were too sexed crazed...yes American Pie was but not AS much. It seemed since they were gay they like went over the top and right away in the opening scene i saw that i was like oh my god this is retarded. Though it got a little bit better it didn't get much better. I thought the movie was just a bad movie I didn't find one part THAT funny. And i love Comedys and it wasn't because i was offended...it was because the movie cracked cheesy jokes that a 16 year old could of written just as good of a story...

Well I mostly disagree with you but I do agree that this movie will not make the average heterosexual understand gay people any better. I am a gay kid in HS. I play sports. I don't act gay. Sometimes I get annoyed when things make us all out to be femminine, but at the same time I don't feel that anything is actually wrong with this movie besides the fact that it wasn't the greatest. In a perfect world where people weren't so god damn stupid and judgemental, I would not have any problem with this movie at all. Unfortunately I find myself coming away from it with a feeling of "ehh all this did was make me giggle a little while making gay people even more missunderstood"

Still I do not have a problem with this movie. It was alright. My problem is with the poorly educated people of this world who can't understand something as simple as "We are just like you except we like the same sex, and some of us tend to act like girls. THATS IT!"

I found the film overall to be very funny. The two scenes in poor taste because they reflect on victims and a non-choice condition were the pedophile and blind girl.

Lol, I couldn't agree more, email2michael.

Yet again, I'm a straight female so maybe that has something to do with it.

Still, no thank you.

The scene with the two old men in the bar: that was a slam against pedophiles. "NAMBLA" or "The North American Man/Boy Love Association" is an organization of men who express interest in young boys -- like ten years old kinda young. The folks over at NAMBLA, when they were more active, have in the past wanted to get in to gay rights parades and such, and the gay community, rightly so in my opinion, have denied them the right to associate.

I saw this in a theater full of of-age gay men. Everybody laughed, because everybody there was old enough to know who NAMBLA is, to remember them trying to get into the parades, to remember the controversy in the gay press, and to understand the gag.

This is why movies have "parental guidance" on them. So when you don't have enough experience to put adult situations into context, there's somebody there to explain it to you.

Men are ALWAYS depicted like that in pop culture, so go whinge about AMERICAN PIE!
