I recently had a an arguement with someone about this film

They couldn't grasp why I thought this film was amazing and jokingly called me a fag (yup that happened), for liking it. I tried to explain that storytelling and film making, are just that. Whether your comfortable with the story or not. It is a story, and one about two men dealing with their own sexuality at that moment in time,..and it could have been about anyone. It's beautifully shot,..the writing is brilliant,..and the subtle yet amazing soundtrack is emotional. What I am trying to say is while I am a straight white male,...the subject means nothing,....it is about the arc of story, and the growth of the characters, in that story.

Hi HelloGordon

I've no wish to sound condescending, but you are absolutely right to praise Brokeback, and understand that a film/story, is just that, an image of reality. Your appreciation of a good story, while not immediately espousing the subject is as it should be. If I didn't agree with you I dread what sort of character I might be, given the genres of story I have enjoyed over the years!

I knew someone years ago who insisted that an actor who played a certain type of part on screen, violent, gay, whatever, MUST be 'like that'. Crazy! He didn't understand the concept of 'acting' at all.

Small minds always boil down movies, recent events, historical events down to the most obvious factors. And they stick on that. Its what they know, its all they want to know.

So when someone who does not know the quality of scripts, acting, direction and cinematography either sees a movie and or merely hears about it then the opinions fly.

Your correct of course, and Brokeback is a case in point. In the days when Brokeback was discussed, the majority of people who seemed to disapprove of the story, admitted to NOT having seen it! Fearing the very idea of two apparently straight guys in love!

Nowadays, 11 years on, Brokeback seems airbrushed out of public consciousness! Never do I see the DVD on supermarket shelves amongst all the violent, salacious puerile dross which holds the limited minds of the majority!

Incidentally, two apparently straight guys at a table at the Golden Globes in LA, were caught on camera seriously kissing, apparently commiserating on NOT winning a statue! Missed their names or seeing their faces as the camera moved, but guess they will be on social media if I search!

Every genre is acceptable except for the gay one. Gayness seems to be the most inconvenient truth. So if you ignore it maybe it won;t be true. Ridiculous.

'Hi, Perpetuating the species' is the 'Prime directive'. Nothing must threaten that!

Pity the human race hasn't learned restraint. 'Solyent Green' (or a similar titled film), was it that suggested the logical outcome of unrestrained breeding.

That's an interesting question but you probably didn't think it through.

Think of Leni Riefenstahl. According to many, she was a great director. But on the wrong side of History. So today, even if her work should be praised, she's is shout down because she helped nazis throught her art, even if she didn't agree with the nazis.

Also, if you want to even more challenged by today's standard's, try to imagine doing a pro pedophile movie with today's standard. Even if the film is shot by a great director, with great actors, great cinematography, ect. Will you're opinion be the same. Think about it.

reply

LOL! So you put gays on the same level as pedophiles? That’s all we need to know about you.

reply

He didn't though.

The point is just that for someone who is morally against homosexuality it will be difficult for them to appreciate any part of the filmmaking.

reply

NO...HE EQUATED GAYS IN FILM TO PEDOPHILES IN FILMS...NAZIS TOO...HE IS AN ASSHOLE...WHAT ARE YOU?

reply

Nope, he really didn't.

reply

LMAO..."AS A GAY MAN"...IS THERE A WORD FOR STRAIGHT GUYS WHO PRETEND TO BE GAY ON THE INTERNET SO THEY CAN EXPRESS THEIR SHIT BELIEFS FROM A PLACE OF PROTECTION?

AND YES...YES HE DID.

That movie The Woodsman is kinda pro pedophile. It's creates sympathy for the protagonist and he's a pedo.

BBM might be a better movie than TW. Although, I didn't get the hype surrounding BBM. As far as filmmaking goes, it's pretty solid but I didn't find it to be a 'masterpiece' like some were proclaiming.

I actually found Power Of The Dog to be more intriguing. Although, it's not as heavy on the 'gay stuff' as BBM.
