Is it doubtful could that we can ever realistically make a suit as durable and compact as Tony Stark's?

I mean, we could possibly create a reasonable facsimile at some point in the future, can't we? Would the biggest obstacles be power and some kind of (probably impossible) protection from extreme physical forces?

The biggest obstacle, and the most unrealistic part of Ironman, would be preventing the pilot from turning into mush inside the suit from some of the hits we've seen Tony take.

It could be durable, just not compact. And we're a long way from it being able to self-assemble. I could see Elon Musk flying around in something like this.

I don't think it's impossible. We don't have the tech yet. Smart materials have already been developed which changed state or shape when subject to magnetic and/or electrical forces.
Major requirement would be needed to refine their responses to simulate human movement.

And it would still be useless as a suit... Mind, the movies have had the suits remotely operated and operated solely by an AI, so that might make sense. The problem of it as a suit is that the accelerations would puree the operator. If by future tech you include fanciful Star Trek-like "inertial dampeners"... Well, then, I guess it would be fine.
