Why didn't the machine stop though?...

When the machine was about to cut the guys hand off, Trevor was pressing the red "stop" button, and the rest of the workers were trying to turn it off too...why didn't the machine stop? Any ideas?

i thought the same , except if EVERYTHING is a dream and none of it was ever real

reply

Because it is symbolic. The machine represents the harsh realities
of working in factories in the era of the machine shops where people
got mangled and killed until there were unions to stop that and
demand safety guards and measures to make machines safer, but
there is always a failure mode or a careless worker.
