Is this the first major heroic representation of a gay character?

I saw this in the theater and as a 21 year old gay this film was everything to me, I couldn't believe my eyes. I still get a warm feeling from Colin's godlike Apollonian performance. So it is true, positive representation does have a positive effect, however films can't be made revolving around representation like they are today, that is insane.

In Alexander's time and culture, I don't think he would have been regarded as "gay". A certain amount of male-on-male action was taken for granted as a normal part of life for a man of his class. Needless to say (although I'm going to say it), that's not true in our time and culture, nor should it be.
