Oh dear, I thought...

Kevin Costner. I will regret this.

But it's a Western so I gave it a try.

Loved it.

The detail.

Window panes made from blown glass rather than modern panes.

The haphazard gun battle at the end.

I was captivated by the film from start to finish. And by Annette, she ages well.

Michael Gambon using an accent from his home city of Dublin and not his usual media accent.

A variety of settler accents rather than the usual American accents.

I could go on.

That was pretty much my mindset as well when I finally sat down to watch this one. I sat through "Dances" (which was okay, but way too long) and "Waterworld" (which was almost unwatchable and waaaayyy too long), so my expectations were not too high. I was pleasantly surprised. This film is now among my favorite westerns. Oddly enough, I rather liked "The Postman".

why do people dislike Costner?
From the moment I first saw "American Flyers" I knew -knew- -knew he would be a star, be very American in his outlook on movies, be very cute always and make a lot of money!

If you want to see Costner in the beginning of his career, find American Flyers.
Yes it is a sob story sorry that is a spoiler I guess.
But he is the absolute star of that movie, but the supporting cast is so fabulous.

Costner was meant to be a movie star, but I think all he wants is to be an actor taken seriously.
I try to see most of his movies.

We saw Dances during a Sunday afternoon while there was an open house at our place. we wanted to sell and be gone for a whole afternoon.
The theatre was PACKED. we had to sit up near the wall. I couldn't believe it.

that movie was so good in every way. I see it now and I don't feel as moved as I did then because I have seen it 5 or 6 times. but that first time was unforgettable and you can see why Hollywood voted it best pic.

I wouldn't call myself a fan of Mr. Costner, but I'm not a hater, either. He has a number of films I enjoy very much. Here's a list of his films in the order I've seen them and my like or dislike of them. Possible spoliers.

1. The Big Chill - I'd completely forgotten about this one. Liked it.

2. No Way Out - Loved it. A wonderful political thriller with a nice twist. He and Sean Young had good chemistry IMHO; until she was murdered, of course.

3. Silverado - Loved it. One of my favorite westerns. I wanted a sequel. It's one that I can rewatch infinitely and recite dialogue along with the actors. 

4. The Bodyguard - Liked it somewhat; didn't love it.

5. Field Of Dreams - Sorry, I know this one is loved, but it was all I could do not to turn it off.

6. Tin Cup - Liked it somewhat because I used to play golf, didn't love it.

7. The Postman - Liked this one more than most people.

8. Robin: Prince Of Thieves: Absolutely adore this film. Had a good time watching it with my two children when it came on premium channels. It's another one I can re-watch and recite dialogue with. My kids were crazy about Friar Tuck 

9. The Untouchables - My wife loves this one. I like it a great deal. Mr. Costner and Mr. Connery had great chemistry.

10. Wyatt Earp - Loved it. Another on my list of favorite westerns. To my knowledge, the most historically accurate film ever made about this iconic shootist. I am much more of a Kurt Russell fan than I am Costner, and I also loved Tombstone. The depiction of the famous gunfight at the OK Corral was more historically accurate in Tombstone, but Wyatt Earp was more accurate overall. Hope I didn't make you dizzy there. 

11. Open Range - The third Costner entry on my list of fave westerns. He, Ms. Bening and Mr. Duvall have wonderful chemistry. The gunplay is just incredible.

Last and certainly least

12. Waterworld - Had a few redeeming qualities, but just didn't do it for me. I love other post-apocalyptic films like the Mad Max franchise (except the newest one) but I just could not get into this one.

And that's my Kevin Costner list.

I liked The Postman also. Definitely underrated.

Yeah, this is a good movie. Probably the last good true Western they put out unless i've missed something.

Westerns are normally one of my least favorite genres, but I really liked this movie.
