Were they kidding with the VFX?

This movie isn't as bad as its reputation suggests it is, but man the VFX work on this film is terrible, it looks like it came right out of a SyFy Channel movie. Was it a rush job or something?

2014: The Year of Godzilla

probably, also the movie's budget wasn't really that high for this kind of FX heavy film.

reply

I take it a lot of the budget went to attract the actors?

reply

probably. The budget was lower than even Deep Impact which came out in 1998

Watched this movie for the first time today and oh my god that is some terrible FX.
It would have been so much better if they used more models instead of these PSX like effects.

reply

they have not aged well

I don't understand these "haven't aged well" comments. VFX didn't look good even when the movie came out, let alone now. I still love it and watch it regularly. It's not even a guilty pleasure, because I have no guilt about loving this movie.

I think it's easy to judge too harshly, especially since we're used to CG now that has improved exponentially since this was made. I agree some of the sequences -- like the buildings in Rome exploding (why??) -- are a bit undercooked, but I quite like the way they chose to represent things like the ship moving though the magma, which in reality should be opaque.

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

It cost $85M which is not cheap per se, but I wonder if the cast's salaries took up a chunk of that.

Considering the quality of the finished film, the performances, the script, and the special effects, I can only conclude that the film's producers spent most of the budget on hookers and blow... but insisted that a film be made anyway.

Or maybe it was the scam from "The Producers" in action.

I like how they created the gimmick of this magic camera so they could totally cheat with crappy effects on the tv monitors instead of actually having to create all the realistic images. When they do cut to real world events it ain't much better!
