Which are the best King adaptations?

I didn't like this film much and like many adaptations of Stephen King works I felt it fell far short of the book. Which fims do you think did the best job of adapting a King book to film?

reply

Shawshank redemption, The Shining and Green Mile. Serialization of Jerusalems Lot was pretty good as well.

reply

I'd like to add Dolores Claiborne and Misery to those already mentioned. OK, that's a bit Kathy Bates-centric. Still, great character studies (not only Bates).

Just checked and there are as much as 106 King adaptations. To check them all out would sure take a lot of time... (Though some of them are actually shorts)

reply

Yes,I would definitely add Dolores Claiborne.About Misery,I am not sure.

I can't find anything about this on the net, at least in motion pictures or video. Is it a comic book or what?

reply

The Langoliers... almost word for word with the story.

reply

It may be word-for-word, but done so poorly. The movie was so boring.

**spoilers ahead**

i agree ... it needs a remake ... it was a little early for really good cgi ... just the special effects in the movie made it flat ... or the general look of it ... not sure i can put my finger on the exact problem with the look that added more to the 'dullness' than the acting/directing/etc ...

i really liked tho Dean Stockwell as the mystery writer ... something of a 'hack' writer it seems (i would need to reread the story actually since it's been years and years) ... he does a great job i think in that role

while it wasn't exactly faithful to the short story and was fleshed out more for a feature-length movie, "Dolan's Cadillac" ... it keeps the general feel of the story etc ... i never noticed it in the theatres tho and only stumbled across it on imdb and then had to hunt for a copy ... but well worth a watch imho ... Christian Slater is very good in this btw

and even with the ending change, i think "The Mist" is one of the strongest of all King-based movies ... Frank Darabont is the man now at least for interpreting King, both adapting screenplay and direction ... he's had some outstanding achievements and they've been mentioned of course ... he seems 'born to it' ... the theatre i saw the mist in had a great sound system and it was so hard for me not to pull my feet up off the floor as you would HEAR these things scurrying across the floor ... total creep-out ... two girls did pull their feet up a few aisles away ...

and on a different subject, THRILLED to see Darabont connected to a Godzilla project :)

also thought that from the 'nightmares and dreamscapes' series that "The Road Virus Heads North" and "Umney's Last Case" were both very strong adaptations ...

and despite many changes, the two part "'Salem's Lot" with Rob Lowe was also well above average ... he did a very good job in the lead role and overall, well worth the watch

reply

Thing is, for The Mist, King actually liked the movie's ending better. Personally, I'm torn. Both endings left you with a sense of desolation and hopelessness, but the movie's ending tied everything up.

Maybe they felt that going with the original ending would have left people feeling like a sequel was due, and they didn't want to do one.

If it's tourist season, why can't we shoot them?

The Langoliers is stunningly awful.

Some of my favorites are The Shining, Stand by Me, Pet Sematary, Misery, Dolores Claiborne, The Langoliers, The Green Mile..

You can't palm off a second-rater on me. You gotta remember I was in the pink!

reply

Alright, I'll admit the Mist was a good adaptation of the book, almost word for word, too. But I still can't get over the ending...Both the book & movie ended depressingly, but the novella had HOPE. The movie must have figured moviegoers would have been angry with the book ending, but I think most people were still pretty dissatified with him killing his child...it really seems wrong to have him kill the boy after trying so hard to protect him...

My personal pics...

The Shawshank Redemption, Misery, The Mist, The Green Mile, Secret Window, The Dead Zone, Hearts in Atlantis, 1408, Stand By Me, Apt Pupil, Dolores Claiborne

I couldn't decide, but this is not one of them.

What the hell are you on about ? The Shining is the worst adaptation of all time of a Stephen King story - at least 1408 follows the original story. Kubrick's "The Shining" is just terrible - its doesn't follow the story (Kubrick just made up his own version), the Twins were never in the book like they were in the film and Jack Nicklson's Jack Torrence was funny - its not ment to be funny - he goes from nice to mad in 1 step, were as his maddness is ment to build up during the events of the story (like in the TV version).

And as for 1408 - I loved it ! The tension was there, the atmosphere, a great cast (I can't imagine anyone else playing Mike Eslin than John Cusack, he does the character soo well and captures his sense of humour too), a brilliant script, and moments that actually made me jump - the only bad thing I can say is that they changed the ending - and you know what - it was just as good as the one in the short story !

IT I thought was good through out, Misery good, Carrie good, can not believe you didn't mention Green Mile (it is the best Stephen King adaptation outside of 1408, Shawshank and IT), aaannnnddddd alot of modern King adaptations are quite good - 1408, Riding the Bullet, the TV version of Salem's Lot. You hate most of them because they don't follow the book to the exact detail - the key to a great adaptation is leaving enough in so a fan of the book can enjoy the film - but taking enough out so the masses can enjoy it too !

anyone that says Kubricks The Shinning, has not read the book. It was horrible adaptation besides Curry's performance.

Best adaptations imo , The Mist and Pet Sem

The Shining with Steven Weber.

I actually like that version as well. Not better than the original, but it was a nice take on the story. I didn't prefer the actor they cast as the son though.

reply

"The Stand" is one of them. One of the 1st or 2nd books I read by him and then I saw the TV movies. "It" is another. Also "The Shining" (SK's version, not the Steven Weber version, "Misery", "Carrie", "Green Mile", Stand by Me", "The Shawshank Redemption", "Christine" and "The Dead Zone" are great! He's so prolific and a great writer. I like most of the movie/TV adaptations that have been done. Only a few are duds.

reply

Darabont's films, Stand By Me, 1408, Misery, Carrie, The Dark Half. All the others do not do justice to the books at all.

reply

I like The Langoliers, The Stand, The Green Mile and Stand By Me.

When you all say 'The Shining' I hope you all are talking about the TV movie that was on like 10 years ago and NOT the Stanley Kubrick movie. The Kubrick movie and the book werent even close to the same.

Did everyone forget about The Stand. It is by far the best Stephen King adaptation.
