"Black people don't like Mayonnaise!" Huh?

I thought I had heard every racial stereotype known to man, but since when do black people hate mayonnaise? I originally saw this with a nearly all black audience in Maryland, and nobody laughed during the mayonnaise jokes. I even heard a few "say whats?" at the mayo jokes.

I asked a couple of black guys I worked with about it. They had no clue either. Quote from one who had seen it: "You ever been to a bbq run by a brother? There some potato salad eating fools at those! I didn't get the mayo jokes either. In fact I'm glad you asked, because I was wondering if maybe white people thought we don't eat mayo."

I wondered about that too, but then I tried to figure out where it came from. I suspect it may have originated in the Martin Mull movie "History of White People in America" (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0089277/)

I remember there was something in the movie about how much white people loved mayonnaise sandwiches. Where they got that I'll never know...

In fact, when confirming the name of the movie, I checked out that link. There was no Trivia or Memorable Quotes, but there was a User Comment by "JoeRob" entitled "Where the White Folks Roam"
and he says:
"Could you pick us up about 5 jars of mayonnaise?"

So, maybe it had to do with that movie...

I know two Nicoles, they're both black, and they both loooooooove mayonnaise. But you have to remember, that this movie was a spoof on all those racist movies and that it was making fun of white people. If you saw the coming attractions, you should know that.

It wasn't trying to be mean to any race or culture, it just poked fun at racist people, which I agree with. *shrug* I don't like racism.

I think there's a "joke" about it in Pulp Ficition too, I'm not 100% sure though...

reply

In "Pulp Fiction" there was just a little chat about Euro burger eaters and how they put mayo on their steamed hams. Mmmmmm...steamed hams.

reply

the thing in pulp fiction is John Travolta was talking about how Euro's put mayo on there fries and samual L jackson thought it was gross to put mayo on fries it wasn't saying that he didn't like mayo though also in "Friday" Ice Cube looks in the fridge and there is a jar of mayo, but I just wannna say I hate that gay mayo joke in Undercover brother

reply

Yeah, that was a European Vs American thing, not a black Vs white thing.

Lots of Americans who love mayo don't want it on their fries.

reply

How in gods name someone could eat mayo with fries, I'll never know. :)

reply

The same way they eat ketchup with their fries...with their mouths:) I eat mayo only on chik fil-a fries. It's not that bad. I think they just needed some other stereotypes for the movie, but black folks love some mayonnaise. I'm from New Orleans and we love extra mayo and hot sauce on our shrimp po-boy.

On Beverly Hills Cop, Rosewood asked for extra mayo on the shrimp salad sandwich the guy from Karate Kid brought down to them when they were on the stakeout watching Axle Foley.

I watch too much TV.

I'm from Holland (Netherlands) and it is normal here to eat mayo with french fries. When you go to McDonalds, for example, you don't get ketchup packets....you get mayo packets. You have to ask for ketchup. :)

reply

yeah, same here (Germany), best is to order both ketchup and mayo and mix them up together in the french fries! mmmmm, i'm getting hungry.... :D
btw. i think no man on earth would have eatn that discusting looking "mayo" in the movie, that stuff looked like someone had chewed it for an hour and spit it back in the jar :)

Are you people from Mars or what? Why are you watching a movie to learn about cultures.

I eat Mayonnaise with my fries. It's delicious. :-) I'm black and I used to like Miracle Whip more than Mayonnaise but now it's the other way around. But I love both. I'm sure it's just another stereotype that originated somewhere, whether we all heard about it or not.

LOVE your signature! I have no idea why, but Remember the Titans has to be one of my favorite movies. :)

Okay, on to the topic: I'd never heard of black people disliking mayo. I just thought it was a stereotype I hadn't heard of and shrugged it off... In Miami (where I'm from) people ask for both Mayo and Ketchup for their fries. Personally, I hate mayo and don't put it on anything.

It's actually quite good, I swear!

oh ya! well it's not really racist in PF because Vincent agrees with Jules that putting mayo on fries is pretty disgusting.

I've been told by black friends that it's Miracle Whip that they don't like but that they do like mayonnaise. Now maybe it was easier for the producers to go with a generic mayonnaise referance than get the rights to make fun of a brand name product. I don't know.

Well, I'm a black guy, and I hate mayonnaise. I don't even eat potato salad either. I don't think the film is at all trying to say that all black people are like that with regard to mayonnaise. Maybe the writers are just saying that they are like that about mayonnaise (because, in fact, one of the writers is black, and perhaps all of the black people he knows hate mayonnaise as well). But, if that's not the case, it's just a spoof, and mayonnaise is an easy target.

Then eat mayo till it gets black

reply

It made sense to me, although maybe it is more regional...

I live in Texas, and most of the black folks I know don't like mayonnaise. A black friend of mine once told me that I was the only white person that he knew that didn't like it, and that he was the only black person he knew who did.

lmao at this whole thread

Also, Mayonnaise is white, so maybe the writers put that in there because its a white sauce, and it makes sense that a black man wouldn't like a sauce that is white.
