Bebop fans also fans of Firefly/serenity?

Hi peeps, I saw the series first on adult swim, (ty adult swim for everything, esp aqhf, and CB) and then i rented the movie. I love the series and the movie, i like the series a bit better. I put off seeing Serenity cause the horrible trailer but im glad i caught it in the theatre, i loved it. I was really happy when i found out that Firefly was the series that serenity was based on. I had no idea they were connecteed untill i saw a firefly marathin on sci-fi channel. Anyway, i was wondering if anyone on this board enjoys both firefly and bebop. They are very similar and both well done. Im glad that i syumbled onto these shows because im not really an amime fan or a sci-fi fan. Im just interested in hearing from other fans, im going to finish this and watch session 2 on dvd, it just came in the mail. I've never watched the entire series, ive just seen whatever i could on adult swim. Gotta go.

It's pretty obvious that Bebop supplied the inspiration for Firefly (which was very superior TV science fiction and far better than anything that had been on offer before) but that doesn't mean that Firefly/Serenity ripped it off any more than Ralph Vaughan-Williams "ripped off" English folk songs when he wrote "Five variants of Dives and Lazarus"...

Yes, I like both.

Joss Whedon has openly admitted many times where the inspirations come for Firefly, never has Cowboy Bebop ever come up. Plus not everybody has seen Cowboy Bebop same can be said for Firefly.

Honestly, the only thing I think is better then Cowboy Bebop is Firefly. However, both films have slightly different feels then the television shows, and there are better.

Firefly 10/10
Cowboy Bebop 10/10
Serenity 9.5/10
Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' on Heaven's Door 8/10

I was a fan of Cowboy Bebop before I became a fan of Firefly. Even if Firefly was a ripoff of Cowboy Bebop, I don't care. Firefly was a great, original take on space bounty hunters and so was Cowboy Bebop. But, that was about all they had in common, so no, I don't think Firefly was a ripoff. Plus, I actually cared about the characters. I actually got into Firefly through the movie Serenity. I had never even heard of it before then, thanks goodness I did because now I'm a browncoat. But, Bebop will always be one of the greatest anime to ever enter America aside from Evangelion, Akira and many others.

I love both BeBop and Firefly, though I think Bebop is the better series. That being said, it was meant to only run 25 episodes, and Firefly was axed before it had it's chance to really shine, so, we'll never know how good IT would have or could have been.

Yes, I thoroughly enjoyed Firefly (and Serenity) and after watching Cowboy Bebop recently I definately felt as if Whedon was inspired by and channeling elements from the Bebop series into his own show. Many similiarities.
Also on this board I find the discussion about Outlaw Star very telling that Whedon was looking to these types of shows when he came up with the concept for Firefly.

*beep* yeah, both Firefly and Cowboy Bebop are totally awesome. And anyone who says Firefly sucks hasn't actually seen it. It's that simple.

Here here!

I started watching Cowboy Bebop shortly before I moved to a town where I couldn't get cable...I believe that was about mid-2002. Watched it whenever I went somewhere that had cable, adored it, bought the movie when it came out before even seeing it because I knew it would be awesome (and it freakin' WAS!).

Got hooked on Firefly when my boyfriend (who had watched the series when it was on TV) forced me to watch the pilot, "Serenity", in mid-2006. Early 2007 was when I got to see Firefly in its entirety, then watched Serenity the day after finishing Firefly. This was, incidentally, the copy of Serenity I had bought for him for Christmas the year of its release, so I was a Browncoat before I even knew what a Browncoat was =3

A few weeks ago, I started my third runthrough of Firefly, intending on watching it from start to finish once more. I got through 2 episodes on the first disc and had a strangely overwhelming urge to watch Cowboy Bebop - at which point I took Firefly out of the XBox 360 and stuck the first disc of the series Cowboy Bebop in and watched almost straight through, with the exception of the first episode (which I had seen very recently so I didn't feel the need to watch it again). Firefly reminds me a lot of Bebop - and one thing I love about both is that there are no aliens, no Death Star-like spaceships, just...people. Human beings, trying to get by. The thing that Star Trek and other shows like it lack and is the reason I don't watch them.

People trying to get by. Why couldn't I explain why they both work in such a simple fashion?

I was a Firefly fan first, but that was how I got into Cowboy Bebop in the first place.

I heard that Firefly was inspired by Cowboy Bebop, due to similar premises, settings and characters, so I decided to give it a shot. Let me tell you, after watching it, I still think they're both great shows in their own right, but, I can tell you right now, Firefly is definitely no Cowboy Bebop, and Mal Reynolds is definitely no Spike Spiegel.

The rest, as you can see, is pretty much history, and I've been a fan ever since.
