Bebop fans also fans of Firefly/serenity?

Hi peeps, I saw the series first on adult swim, (ty adult swim for everything, esp aqhf, and CB) and then i rented the movie. I love the series and the movie, i like the series a bit better. I put off seeing Serenity cause the horrible trailer but im glad i caught it in the theatre, i loved it. I was really happy when i found out that Firefly was the series that serenity was based on. I had no idea they were connecteed untill i saw a firefly marathin on sci-fi channel. Anyway, i was wondering if anyone on this board enjoys both firefly and bebop. They are very similar and both well done. Im glad that i syumbled onto these shows because im not really an amime fan or a sci-fi fan. Im just interested in hearing from other fans, im going to finish this and watch session 2 on dvd, it just came in the mail. I've never watched the entire series, ive just seen whatever i could on adult swim. Gotta go.

Serenity, in my opinion, didn't capture the personalities of those in the TV series (Firefly) as well as it could have done, mainly because the film was attempting to reach out to a new audience. It was a shame, as the characters in the series were excellently portrayed and interacted with each other in an effortless manner thanks to the script. Firefly did have some poor episodes, although there are moments in the series that border on excellence.

Opinions surely differ because people look for different things in what they watch. I personally watched Cowboy Bebop for the first time after Firefly, and so probably see things from a different perspective.

I didn't really care for the first few hours of Cowboy Bebop (the series). The pace of the action made things feel rushed, especially towards the end of each episode. They could have easily stretched the storylines out to 45 minutes (2 episodes) and given each one more backbone. I stuck at it though, and gradually grew to love the series as the writers wove a greater amount of depth into each story, linking each one with the mentality of the excellently written characters.

Firely is fantastic. The theme of "created family" is huge in both Firefly and Bebop.

Huge fan of both.

I really enjoyed Firefly and also noticed the similarities to Cowboy Bebop. Along with Cowboy Bebop I think there is also a bit of 'Trigun' in Firefly along with a touch of 'Red Dwarf' - all of which I had watched before watching Firefly. In anycase I enjoyed Firefly very much...but the originality tag does quite firmly stay with Cowboy Bebop & Red Dwarf which preceded Firefly by a GOOD few years...

Very true. I love both series, and Serenity, while not a poor film, it certainly did not do the series justice. It just did not have the same feel to it. All the sudden the crew of Serenity are good guys. Still, it was a good film, and a fitting end to the series.

I think a lot of people forget that Serenity was really the Series Finale of Firefly (unless they end up making more, but I'm not holding my breath). As a finale, it draws upon all the previous development. Yes, it did stop to (re)introduce all the characters to the audience, allowing for people who had not seen the series, but most of the events and the characters' actions were appropriate for what the story was about at that point. The movie was not intended as fully standalone, you needed a healthy dose of the series to understand all the motivations and characters at play in the movie.

I know that, but it just doesn't have the spirit of Firefly. It is very good in its own right, but it withers as part of Firefly.

I am a BrownCoat BeBop fan. I'm not really the type you would expect to like eather one though. I am a hot rod builder who doen't usually care for Anime, some of it is good, but most just isn't my cup of tea, so to speak. Nore am I the usual Sci-Fi Fan, Even though I do Like Sci-Fi, you would never catch me at a convention.
I like Firefly and BeBop though, they are both great. Good Stories, Plot development, Character depth, gun fights.....Just good old fashioned fun.
I seem to be the minority on this one though.

When the show (Firefly) came out I didn't watch it cause I chose to stay away from it because I really hate Buffy nd Angel. But I went to see the movie at the movies and I didn't realise it was from the same show. I instantly hated it. Bebop however happens to be brilliant.

Why did you "instantly hate" it? Because you found out it was from Joss Whedon? "Instantly" is a bad word to use. It implies that you (A. are an idiot, (B. never gave it chance, or (C. are an idiot and never gave it a chance.

By the way, Browncoat Bebop fan seems a bit unwieldy. How about Browncoat Cowboy or something like that?

You misunderstood me, I didn't instantly hate it because I found out it was from the makers of Buffy, that is implying I liked it before I found out, where as I didn't, I went to see the movie and I hated it. Like I went to see Hellboy and I hated it.

Short anwser: Yes. =)

Happy to join the list. I loved Cowboy Bebop and cried when I couldn't see more of Firefly (except for Serenity, wish was incredibly good). I wished I knew a bit more about Sci-fi, because it's what I enjoy the most. If someone could recommend me some animes/comics or movies life Bebop/Firefly I would appriciate it =).

YES. The only show I think is better than Cowboy Bebop is Firefly. Both movies are amazing, but still not as good as the shows.

reply

Totally. I love both, but firefly most. Firefly and Bebop are pretty different though, apart from the setting.

reply

I haven't seen any of Firefly, but I'm awfully skeptical about it. As I've found out people who tend to like it, enjoy shows like Buffy and Angel, both of which I consider to be an abomination.

However i have seen Serenity, and i couldn't watch it for longer than 40 minutes. I just couldn't stand the awful acting, and i can't stand the actor who plays the main character.

I will give Firefly a chance though, i can't write it off just because i hated Whedon's other stuff.

reply

I didn't like both these shows either, but I absolutely love firefly.

Firefly has some of the same witty banter, and a similar sense of humor to Buffy and Angel, but other than that there really is no similarity. I never got into Buffy, but I did like Angel mostly for its comedic aspects.

Firefly bares little similarity at all. I think one of the things that most people didn't like about Angel (and I suppose Buffy) was the 'goofiness' of the shows for lack of a better term, and how despite its light and whimsical tone, the shows weren't ashamed of being serious drama at the drop of a hat, which gives the shows the appearance of taking themselves too seriously.

Firefly doesn't suffer from that same problem. The theme and tone of the show is much more consistent in general. It still has its Whedon-esque akward interactions, and stammering dialogue, but it doesn't dip into the bizarre and silly supernatural elements, so it seems more natural when the characters take their situation seriously, and it is easier for the audience to do the same.

I'm a huge fan of Cowboy Bebop now after just recently finishing Cowboy Bebop and a die hard Browncoat which I will remain forever. But without Firefly/Serenity I would have never come across Cowboy Bebop, I wasn't & still ain't really into anime but the excellent Firefly/Serenity podcast "The Signal" do sci-fi reviews on different shows each show and then talk about the show in question and also try and find any similar things between Firefly & the show, anyway one day they reviewed Cowboy Bebop and I shorty after briefly checked it out but didn't watch it but recently needed a new show to watch it & remembered that show they reviewed on the podcast "Cowboy Bebop" and now have watched the show & movie in less than 2 weeks (only show do watch quikcer was Firefly which was about 6 six days) and am a avid fan ever since.

Love both of the shows but Firefly will always remain closer to my heart but Cowboy Bebop ain't far behind.

Have a Shiny Christmas and see you in space cowboy.
