Is this Wes Anderson's best?

This is my favorite Wes Anderson movie, I like his style well enough, but I find his characters to be underdeveloped and one-dimensional, and this one is the only one where I actually gave a *beep* about any (in this case, every) character/s. I think every character had depth. I don't know, maybe it was just Gene Hackman. Even if it's not his best, it's definitely my favorite.

And I really really hoped I wouldn't die

I do think this was his best work. I love the characters, the story, everything about it. I consider it his masterpiece.

Let's be bad guys.

reply

Definitely my favorite of all his work.

reply

No.

I've always felt it was his best. I've enjoyed all of his films, but love this one the most. To me it's my favorite 21st-century film so far.

reply

I actually think that objectively it's his best. It just doesn't affect me as much as MK and TGBH

Better to be king for a night than schmuck for a lifetime.

reply

I do believe this is his best picture.
I loved all of WA's movies, but this is by far my favorite (and one of my favorite movies ever, actually).

reply

I love all his films. Genius.

But I have to say I've enjoyed Moonrise Kingdom more than any of the others. What a great cast in that film.

Love them all though.

reply

Until Moonrise Kingdom came out, this was my favorite Anderson film for the longest time.

I much prefer Grand Budapest Hotel. For me, this movie was marred by the extremely silly scene where Royal was taking the boys out to do all sorts of stupid if not illegal stuff, and also by the very laconic delivery of many of the actors' lines. Without Hackman breathing life into it I don't know if I would have liked this movie at all.

reply

You nailed it. Hackman is the reason this shines at all. GBH is his true masterpiece.
