Is this the film that nearly killed the Bond franchise?

This film was borderline self-parody, imagine if they kept going and dialed the camp up to 11 for a 5th Brosnan film! The backlash would have been way worse. Even for those who liked this film would walk out before that film was even over.

Not really; this was the most commercially successful of Brosnan's films*, the reviews at the time were pretty much the same as they were for most post-Connery pre-Craig films, and the feedback from general audiences (e.g. A- from Cinemascore) didn't suggest there was any huge problem. I think it's because the next film is a reboot this now looks like it nearly killed the franchise; if the next had been another Brosnan film, whether in the vein of Die Another Day or something that took things down a notch a la For Your Eyes Only, I think it would be perceived quite differently.

*I think adjusted for inflation Goldeneye slightly tops it, but that's by the by.

LOL, yeah exactly!

This film was a big success at the time. Only Daniel Craig melodrama "Bond" apologists are keen to try and rewrite this as some kind of failure.

The last proper Bond film...

Have you seen many of the Roger Moore films (particularly towards the end of his tenure) as Bond (the ones with the sidekick dumb American small town sheriff, the one where he goes to space, the one where Jaws and the girl fall in love and they play this Looney Tunes kinda love music, the one where Bond dresses as a clown... or Diamonds Are Forever with the funny gay villains and other dumb stuff of that sort?

I actually consider Brosnan to be trying his very best with the material he's being given (making it kinda watchable), the first half of the movie taking part in North Korea is actually 'good'.

Until the moment this movie was released it was the highest grossing James Bond money.

It definitely has some TERRIBLE moments, but I believe there had been prior entries into the franchise that were just as bad... this movie also reminds me a lot of Harrison Ford's situation during the making of Indiana Jones and The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull... lol they are both 4th entries, the lead actor is the only thing making the movie 'bearable', abundance of over-the-top-CGI, annoying supporting cast.

No, at the time it was the highest grossing film in the series. It was far from a self parody, it was one of the less serious ones yet so was Diamonds Are Forever, The Man With The Golden Gun, Moonraker, Octopussy, Tomorrow Never Dies, etc.
